From when she was little, Nishino learned English from eikaiwa schools, and went to America twice. She then was interested in various genres of music, including hip-hop, R&B and reggae. On the other hand, she also enjoyed traditional Japanese literature, and started singing Japanese folk songs. Her dream of becoming a singer started from junior high school. When she was 16 her mother secretly sent a demo tape of hers to the Miss Phoenix Audition
In 2007, while preparing to be a singer, she was also studying English literature at university. At the time she met Australian duo Nervo, who offered Nishino a song called "I Don't Wanna Know" for use in her music project. Nishino rewrote the song's lyrics into Japanese herself, and re-titled it I.
In December 2007 her official site opened, and from that time onwards *I* ~Merry Christmas ver.~ was available as a digital download from several Japanese sites, including mora.jp. Interestingly, the original version of the song "I Don't Wanna Know" was available as a digital download on the American iTunes from New Years' Day onwards. The physical version was released two months later, on the 20th of February.

doll
Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Call me please, say my name
Doll fall
Call me please, say my name
Show me real beat, heat, seal
The song "Doll" by Kana Nishino is a melancholic tune that speaks about a woman who is longing for the affection of her loved one. The lyrics portray the woman's feelings of helplessness and powerlessness as she watches her loved one drift farther and farther away from her. The doll metaphor in the song emphasizes the feeling of being played with and manipulated by the person she loves.
The opening line, "Doll fall だんだん落ちてく 無力なこの夜に" (Doll fall, gradually falling in this helpless night), sets the mood for the rest of the song. The woman is feeling lost and alone in the dark of night, as she watches herself fall apart along with her hope for a brighter tomorrow. The lyrics also show the woman's longing and yearning as she waits for her loved one to call out her name but becomes increasingly hopeless as time goes by.
The chorus of the song features the repeated line, "Call me please, say my name" (Call me please, say my name), which accentuates her desperation for affection and attention from her loved one. The reference to the doll in the chorus shows how she feels like she is being played with, like a doll, by her loved one. Through the lyrics, the woman is struggling to find her identity as she has been reduced to nothing but a doll in her lover's hands.
