Their current lineup consists of Hoffmann, vocalist Mark Tornillo, guitarists Uwe Lulis and Philip Shouse, drummer Christopher Williams and bassist Martin Motnik. Before arriving at their current lineup, Accept has undergone numerous lineup changes, being Hoffmann the last remaining original member since its inception, and he is the only band member to appear on each album.
Accept played an important role in the development of speed and thrash metal, and they were part of the German heavy metal scene, which emerged in the early to mid-1980s. They have also been cited as an influence or inspiration by a number of acts, including Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Testament, Anthrax, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Overkill, Exodus, and Annihilator, as well as fellow Germans such as Helloween, Blind Guardian, Doro, Sodom, Rage, and Grave Digger. Accept achieved its first commercial success with their fifth studio album Balls to the Wall (1983), which is the band's only album to be certified gold in the United States and Canada, and spawned their well-known hit "Balls to the Wall".
Accept have broken up and reformed multiple times. They first split up in 1989, several months after the release of Eat the Heat (which was their only album with Dirkschneider's initial replacement David Reece), but reformed in 1992 and released three more albums before disbanding again in 1997. After briefly reuniting in 2005, Accept announced their third reunion in 2009, with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo replacing Dirkschneider (who declined to participate), and the band has recorded five albums with him: Blood of the Nations (2010), Stalingrad (2012), Blind Rage (2014), The Rise of Chaos (2017) and Too Mean to Die (2021); each of those albums renewed Accept's popularity in Germany and entered the top ten charts there.

Dark Side Of My Heart
Accept Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's beyond a reason, past point of no return
There's a hunger that's calling, and the fever runs wild
It's where the light throws shadows on the thoughts of every child
Deep within this hallowed chamber where two worlds collide
If you open up the door, don't cross the line
And I knew it from the start, there in the dark side of my heart
Just a slave to the shadows, just a pawn in the game
Drawn to the slaughter like a moth before a flame
It's the good and the evil, walking side by side
You can feel it coming, but there is no place to hide
Tell me all your darkest secrets and I'll tell you mine
Open up the door but don't cross the line
You know it's tearing me apart, this is the dark side of me heart
And I knew it from the start, here in the dark side of my heart
There's an ager on my shoulder, but the devils whisper in my ear
It's the battle old as time itself
A taunt that never disappears
Tell me all your darkest secrets and I'll tell you mine
Open up the door but don't cross the line
You know it's tearing me apart, this is the dark side of my heart
And I knew it from the start, there in the dark side of my heart
The lyrics of Accept's "Dark Side Of My Heart" evoke a sense of conflict between good and evil within oneself. The song begins by describing a space within the darkness where a fire still burns, representing a desire or temptation that persists even when reason suggests it should be extinguished. The hunger and fever described could be interpreted as a metaphor for a strong desire or passion that is difficult to resist, leading to a sense of inner turmoil. The line "where the light throws shadows on the thoughts of every child" suggests that this struggle is universal and affects everyone, regardless of their age or experience.
The chorus repeats the idea that this inner conflict is tearing the singer apart and that they have always known that it was a part of their nature. The lines "just a slave to the shadows, just a pawn in the game" reinforce the feeling of being controlled by the darker impulses within oneself. The reference to being drawn to the slaughter like a moth before a flame highlights the danger and potential self-destructiveness of giving in to these impulses.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of sharing one's inner thoughts and secrets with others, but caution against crossing a line that could lead to even greater conflict. The reference to the devil whispering in one's ear suggests a religious or spiritual undertone to the song, perhaps implying that the struggle between good and evil is ultimately a battle between God and the devil. Overall, the lyrics of "Dark Side Of My Heart" present a powerful and relatable depiction of the internal struggle between conflicting impulses and desires.
