Heavily influenced by his idol, Elvis Presley, and the 1950s rock revolution, he is also known as the most famous dancer of the Hula hoop fad. For the last 40 years he has retained his popularity in Italy, selling millions of records and appearing in numerous TV shows and movies (including a short appearance in Fellini's La Dolce Vita, before becoming a famous artist). In the latter respect, he has also been a creator of a comic genre, with his characteristic walking and his facial expressions. For the most part, his films were commercially successful, in fact in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, he was the king of the Italian box office in low budget movies. As an actor, critics point to Serafino (1968), directed by Pietro Germi, as his best effort.
As a director he frequently casts Ornella Muti, Eleonora Giorgi and his wife Claudia Mori. His best movie like director is "Yuppi Du", winner of The Golden Palm at Cannes Festival. He and Claudia are the parents of Rosita, Rosalinda and Vincent Celentano, the latter most notable to worldwide audiences for playing the Satan character in Mel Gibson`s The Passion of the Christ. He also works often as a host for several Italian television shows.
His 1968 song "Azzurro" has regained popularity in 2006, due to it being the anthem of the Italian national football team (the Azzurri) who won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The artist Vincent Fiorello has also created a remix of the song.
His last concert-event in 2012, after 18 years without live performances, was transmitted on Canale 5, with over 9 million viewers both evenings.
Sono Un Simpatico
Adriano Celentano Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
quando mi guardo allo specchio
sono un simpatico
per i compagni e per gli amici
mentre per te, solo per te,
per te non sono che una cicca
l'avanzo di una sigaretta, fumata.
Quante ragazze mi hanno anche detto
quanti ragazzi
mi voglion tutti per fratello
e invece tu, invece tu
mi sbatti via come una cicca,
perché non sono che una cicca per te.
Io so già,
che un giorno tu
vorrai raccogliermi,
ti brucerai,
con il mio amore,
sì ti brucerai
ma non mi avrai.
Io so già,
che un giorno tu
vorrai raccogliermi,
ti brucerai,
con il mio amore,
sì ti brucerai
ma non mi avrai
The lyrics of Adriano Celentano's song "Sono Un Simpatico" are a reflection on how the singer perceives himself and how he is perceived by others, particularly a woman who seems to reject him. The song begins with Celentano describing how he sees himself as a friendly and likable person, using the word simpatico, which translates to "nice" or "pleasant" in English. He notes that when he looks in the mirror, he sees a likable person, and he is popular with his friends and colleagues.
However, the tone of the song changes when Celentano addresses the woman who does not seem to think of him in the same way. He likens himself to a cigarette butt, an object that is discarded after it has been used up. He compares himself to this object because he believes that the woman only sees him as someone who has already been used up and discarded by others, and she has no interest in him.
Despite her rejection, Celentano believes that she will eventually come back to him, but he knows that by then it will be too late. He warns her that she will burn herself trying to get close to him again, but he will not let her have him. The final repetition of this warning emphasizes his self-confidence and refusal to be taken for granted or undervalued.
Overall, the lyrics of "Sono Un Simpatico" show Celentano's self-awareness of how he is perceived by others and how he perceives himself. It is a reflection on the human need for acceptance and the way in which people can sometimes be viewed only through the lens of others' perceptions.
