Whilst studying to become an accountant, he started a short lived Band with friends “les Dunces” whose style swong between Folk and Rockabilly. He quickly dropped his studies.
Bashung started a band with musicians met in Royan, a new band playing in Restaurants, Hotels and most of all the American bases. his career started with some difficulties with the release of his first single at 19 years of age “Pourquoi rêvez-vous des États-Unis ?” in 1966.
Souris dansez, notez greffier
Le chat veut en finir en beauté
Ballerina cache une ride
Mona Lisa suit le guide
Tu me fais croquer, fromage râpé
Le chat veut en finir en beauté
Le chat veut en finir en beauté
The song "Chat" by Alain Bashung is an intriguing piece that tells a story of a cat who wants to end things beautifully. The first verse mentions the act of threading pearls in reverse, indicating that things are not going in the right direction. The mention of Captain Nemo from Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" implies a desire to escape the current situation. The line "Souris dansez, notez greffier" translates to "mice dance, clerk take note," suggesting that life carries on and its events are recorded.
The second verse contains references to age and beauty. The phrase "Ballerina cache une ride" translates to "the ballerina hides a wrinkle," pointing out that aging can cause one to hide their insecurities. The mention of "Lézard premier degré" refers to a "first-degree lizard," which could be interpreted as someone who is straightforward and honest. Mona Lisa follows this honest guide, contrasting the idea of hiding flaws with the beauty of simplicity. The final line "Tu me fais croquer, fromage râpé" translates to "you make me bite, grated cheese," which could imply a desire for indulgence.
Overall, the lyrics of "Chat" convey a sense of resignation to the ups and downs of life, with the cat wishing to end things beautifully rather than fighting against them. The references to beauty and aging could be interpreted as a reflection of the human condition and the desire for things to be perfect.

Terriens, bonsoir…
