Sommer aus Papier
Anna Depenbusch Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hallo Hallo
Ich bin wach doch Du bist schon weg
Du hast Dich über Nacht irgendwo versteckt
Damit ich ohne Dich hier nicht erfriere
Bau ich min meinen Sommer aus Papier
Ich falt mit einen Leuchtturm
Unten an den Strand
Und zünde alle Feuer
Damit Du mich finden kannst
Ich weiß nicht wo Du warst
Und wohin Du morgen gehst
Ich weiß nur wenn Du da bist
Dass mir sonnenklar ist
Wie Du mir den Kopf verdrehst
Denn das Gefühl brennt auf der Haut
Noch so wie früher und so vertraut
Hallo Hallo
Hallo, Hallo...
The lyrics to Anna Depenbusch's song Sommer aus Papier speak of building a summer out of colorful paper, to be set up during winter when it's freezing outside. The singer wants everyone who's out in the snow to see this paper summer, and she even constructs paper gloves for those who are cold. Though she is without her lover, she builds this paper summer so she won't freeze without him. The singer builds a lighthouse out of paper on the beach and lights it up with paper flames so that her lover can see her. She doesn't know where he was, and she doesn't know where he's going tomorrow, but when he's with her, she feels like she's on fire. When the winter sets in and the world goes to sleep, the singer closes her eyes and continues to build paper summers to keep herself and others warm.

Ich bau mir einen Sommer
I am creating a summer for myself
Aus buntem Glanzpapier
Using colorful glossy paper
Den stell ich auf im Winter
I will exhibit it in winter
Wenn es vor dem Fenster friert
When the world is freezing outside my window
Und jeder soll ihn sehen da draußen vor der Tür
So that everyone can see it outside my door
Und für alle die im Schnee stehn
For all those who stand in the snow
Bau ich Handschuhe aus Papier
I will make gloves out of paper
Denn das Gefühl brennt auf der Haut
Because the feeling burns on my skin
Noch so wie früher und so vertraut
Just like before, and very familiar
Hallo Hallo
Hello hello
Ich bin wach doch Du bist schon weg
I am awake but you are already gone
Du hast Dich über Nacht irgendwo versteckt
You hid yourself overnight
Damit ich ohne Dich hier nicht erfriere
So that I don't freeze without you here
Bau ich min meinen Sommer aus Papier
I will build my summer out of paper
Ich falt mit einen Leuchtturm
I am folding a lighthouse
Unten an den Strand
At the bottom of the beach
Und zünde alle Feuer
And lighting all fires
Damit Du mich finden kannst
So that you can find me
Ich weiß nicht wo Du warst
I don't know where you were
Und wohin Du morgen gehst
And where you are going tomorrow
Ich weiß nur wenn Du da bist
I only know that when you're here
Dass mir sonnenklar ist
It's crystal clear to me
Wie Du mir den Kopf verdrehst
How you turn my head
Wenn die Welt sich sanft zum Schlafen legt
When the world gently goes to sleep
Und alles kommt zur Ruh
And everything is quiet
Weil der Winter langsam einmarschiert
Because winter is slowly coming in
Mach ich meine Augen zu
I will close my eyes
Und gegen Regen, Blitz und Donner
And against rain, lightning, and thunder
Bau ich mir meinen Sommer
I am building my summer for myself
Aus buntem Glanzpapier
Using colorful glossy paper
Den stell ich auf die Straßen
I will place it on the streets
Damit keiner von uns friert
So that none of us freeze
Hallo, Hallo...
Hello, hello...

Here's my translation:
I build myself a summer
of shiny colored paper;
I set it up in winter
before the window freezes.
And everyone can see it,
there inside the door.
And for all those still out in snow
I make gloves of paper, too—
for the feeling burns on the skin,
just as it was and so familiar.
Hello, hello.
Iʼm awake, but youʼre on your way;
gone off into hiding somewhere overnight.
And so that I will not freeze here without you
I build myself a summer of paper.
I go down to a lighthouse
that stands on the beach,
and light up every lamp
just so you can find me.
I donʼt know where you were
or where youʼll go tomorrow.
I just know that when youʼre here
itʼs clear to me as day
how you can make my head spin--
for the feeling burns on the skin
just as it was and so familiar.
Hello, hello.
Iʼm awake, but youʼre on your way;
gone off into hiding somewhere overnight.
So I donʼt freeze to death here without you
I build myself a summer out of paper.
When the world gently lies down to sleep
and we all come to rest
while the winter passes so slowly,
I just close both of my eyes
against all the rain, storm and thunder--
I build myself my summer
made out of colored paper,
then I take it to the streets
so that none of us will freeze.
Hello, hello.
