Aterciopelados, whose name translates as "The Velvety Ones," was formed by former members of Delia Y Los Aminoacidos -- Andrea Echeverri, who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead, and Héctor Buitrago, who plays bass guitar. The original drummer Andres Giraldo* was replaced by Alejandro Duque in 1995 and the original guitar player Charlie Marquez was replaced by Alejandro Gomez Caceras in 1997. Also, lead singer Andrea Echeverri was chosen by Gustavo Cerati to sing "En la Ciudad de la Furia" for Soda Stereo's MTV Unplugged album.
Andrés Giraldo was also part of the Bogotá based band Bloque de Busqueda, known for their mix of artisan / folkloric music with a modern twist full of prominent beats.
Echeverri came out with a self-titled solo album in 2004, "Aemeo" is the lead song in this album.
The band recieved Grammy award nominations in 1997 and 1998.
In October of 2006 they released the album Oye, just a couple of months after Héctor Buitrago came out with his Conhector first solo album.

Leche, pan, tomate, huevos, queso y chocolate, naranjas
Peras y avena, esta es la verdad, es la verdad verdadera
Pasa por los niños, recoge la aspiradora, despincha la
Bicicleta, hornea una lata de ricas galletas
The lyrics of Aterciopelados’ song “Tomate” tell a story about a man with a good sense of humor who taught the singers that they were the best, even as beginners. They mention a notebook where this man had apparently been writing down deep and brilliant thoughts that intrigued and excited them. However, when they finally got a chance to look at the notebook, they were disappointed to find that it contained only a grocery list with items like milk, bread, tomato, eggs, cheese, chocolate, oranges, pears, and oatmeal.
This apparent disappointment reveals a satirical message and a criticism of society's focus on material possessions and consumerism. The mundane list of groceries juxtaposed with the anticipation for deeper meaning in the notebook suggests that people often look for profound truths in superficial things, blinded by societal pressure to chase material possessions. Instead, the song argues that true value lies in everyday experiences and relationships, as it says: “esta es la verdad verdadera” (“this is the true truth”) when listing the groceries the man wrote down.
The simple and upbeat melody of the song contrasts sharply with its underlying message, creating a compelling and thought-provoking piece of music. “Tomate” is a reminder to appreciate the simple pleasures of life and to question the societal values that compel us to seek meaning in possessions rather than people and experiences.
