Stewball
Aufray Hugues Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
C'était un cheval blanc
Il était mon idole
Et moi, j'avais dix ans
Notre pauvre père
Pour acheter ce pur sang
Avait mis dans l'affaire
Il avait dans la tête
D'en faire un grand champion
Pour liquider nos dettes
Et payer la maison
Et croyait à sa chance
Il engagea Stewball
Par un beau dimanche
Au grand prix de St-Paul
"Je sais, dit mon père
Que Stewball va gagner"
Mais, après la rivière
Stewball est tombé
Quand le vétérinaire
D'un seul coup, l'acheva
J'ai vu pleurer mon père
Pour la première fois
Il s'appelait Stewball
C'était un cheval blanc
Il était mon idole
Et moi, j'avais dix ans
La la la lala
La la la lala
Il était mon idole
Et moi, j'avais dix ans
The lyrics of Aufray Hugues's song "Stewball" tell the story of a white horse named Stewball who was the singer's idol. The singer's father had bought Stewball, a purebred racehorse, to turn him into a champion and pay off the family's debts. He believed in Stewball's potential and entered him into a race.
Despite the singer's father's certainty that Stewball would win, the horse stumbled and fell after crossing a river during the race. The veterinarian put Stewball out of his misery, and for the first time, the singer saw their father in tears. The lyrics reflect the loss and grief felt by the singer and their father over the beloved horse.
The song captures the emotional attachment one can have towards an animal, the disappointment that comes with a failed endeavor, and the impact of losing something that one deeply cares for. The lyrics are poignantly expressive, with the sorrow of the situation being beautifully portrayed through the words and music.
