He was born in Pézenas, in the Hérault département of France. A brilliant scholar, he prepared for the entrance exam to the Centrale (engineering school) and Sup-Aero at Montpellier, but was conscripted into the Youth Building Projects in 1942 and sent to Germany in 1943 for compulsory work service. He escaped the same year, and found work as a diver in La Ciotat, a suburb of Marseilles, in 1944.
In 1946, he married Colette Maclaud. They had two children, Ticha (born 1948) and Jacky (1950).
His first published work, Les douze chants d'un imbecile, appeared in 1951. He moved to Paris and opened a fashion and baby clothes shop, still writing and producing plays. Later, he switched to being a fitter of TV aerials and began singing.
In the 1960s, Boby Lapointe started an actor’s career and acted in films by some of the greatest French directors, among which François Truffaut and Claude Sautet.
His fame grew when the actor Bourvil sang Lapointe's song Aragon et Castille in the 1954 film Poisson d'avril. In 1960, film director François Truffaut offered him a part in Tirez sur le Pianiste in which he played Framboise, accompanied by Charles Aznavour on piano. This marked the start of a career that saw Lapointe perform at major venues throughout France. His joyful character led him to build friendships with French stars Anne Sylvestre, Raymond Devos, Jacques Brel and Georges Brassens.
Lapointe was also a mathematician, and developed the bi-bi-binary system (also known as the bibi system) in 1971.

Tous les samedis il catchait
Et les autres jours il s'cachait
Dans les bois, sous les branches
Et là avec un dictionnaire
Il faisait des vers, solitaire
Mais son esprit rugueux
Ne trouvait rien de mieux
Avec j'y rentre dedans
Ou bien j'y casse les dents
C'était trop percutant
Et tout honteux
Il disait "C'est affreux".
J'ai une fleur bleue contondante
Je n'la montre pas à qui veut
Elle n'est pourtant pas méchante
Ma petite fleur bleue
Mais elle est contondante {2x}
Allons tant pis {2x}
Tant pis
Un jour un éditeur affable
Comme il y en a depuis Esope
Le vit dans un café et hop
S'invita à sa table
Il se commanda une bière
Il paraît que ça désaltère
Il prit le manuscrit
Et le lut sans broncher
Bien sûr étant assis
Il n'pouvait pas broncher
Mais il poussait des cris
Comm' si on l'écorchait
Et... Chaleureux
Il lui dit "Cher Monsieur".
Tu as une fleur bleue contondante
Je vais la motnrer à qui veut
Corbleu est-elle assez méchante
Ta petite fleur bleue
Car elle est contondante {2x}
Allons tant mieux {2x}
Tant mieux.
Il devint un auteur célèbre
Il était de tous les galas
Et les autres jours ce gars-là
Cherchait au bout d'ses lèvres
Des petits bouts de chansonnettes
Ça lui donnait mal à la jambe
Car il frappait du pied
Pour battre la mesure
Et ses nouveaux souliers
Avaient une pointure
Un peu trop étriquée
Qui étriquait son caquet
Et... L'éditeur
Lui dit ah ! quel malheur
Ta fleur bleue n'est plus contondante
Je sais qu'tu fais ce que tu peux
Je n'voudrais pas être méchante
Mais que veux-tu donc que
Je fass' de ta fleur pédante
Qui n'est plus contondante
Allons tant pis {2x}
Tant pis.
Il devint boxeur des dimanches
Tous les samedis il boxait
Et les autres jours il bossait
Comme cow-boy dans un ranch
Pour se payer les manuels
Traitant de la poésie cruelle
Et la fille du libraire
Qui avait su lui plaire
L'amena sans manière
Pour clore cette affaire
Devant Monsieur Le Maire
Pas plus tard qu'avant hier
Et... O surprise
Il lui dit entr' deux bises
J'aurai un' fleur bleue contondante
Je vais t'la montrer si tu veux
N'aie pas peur elle n'est pas m'chante
Ma petite fleur bleue
Mais elle est contondante {2x}
Allons tant mieux {2x}
Tant mieux.
The lyrics of Boby Lapointe’s La fleur bleue contondante describe the story of a wrestler who spends his Sundays on the ring and his other days secluded in the woods under the trees, writing poetry. The wrestler’s rugged mind leads him to use unconventional rhyming, putting together words like “printemps” (spring) and “j’y rentre dedans” (I enter it), or “j’y casse les dents” (I break its teeth). The wrestler is embarrassed by his rough poetry, calling it “affreux” (awful).
One day, a friendly publisher spots the wrestler in a café and invites himself to sit at his table. He takes a look at the wrestler's manuscript and reads it without flinching. Instead, he praises the poetic piece, calling it “contondante” (blunt). The poem eventually leads to the wrestler becoming a famous author and singer. However, his success eventually leads him to a writer’s block, losing his once-contondante touch, much to the disappointment of the same publisher who once praised his work.
The lyrics of La fleur bleue contondante are known for their intricate wordplay and use of unusual rhymes. Boby Lapointe, the songwriter, was known for his humorous and whimsical style of writing.

In the woods, under the branches
Et là avec un dictionnaire
And there with a dictionary
Il faisait des vers, solitaire
He made verses, solitary
Mais son esprit rugueux
But his rough spirit
Ne trouvait rien de mieux
Found nothing better
Que d'faire rimer printemps
Than to rhyme spring
Avec j'y rentre dedans
With 'I hit it'
Ou bien j'y casse les dents
Or 'I break my teeth'
C'était trop percutant
It was too harsh
Et tout honteux
And all ashamed
Il disait "C'est affreux".
He said, "It's awful".
J'ai une fleur bleue contondante
I have a blunt blue flower
Je n'la montre pas à qui veut
I don't show it to just anyone
Elle n'est pourtant pas méchante
Yet it's not mean
Ma petite fleur bleue
My little blue flower
Allons tant pis, tant pis

Un jour un éditeur affable
One day, a kind publisher
Comme il y en a depuis Esope

Il se commanda une bière
Ordered a beer for himself
Il paraît que ça désaltère
It seems that it quenches the thirst
Il prit le manuscrit
He took the manuscript
Et le lut sans broncher
And read it without flinching
Bien sûr étant assis
Of course, sitting down
Il n'pouvait pas broncher
He couldn't move
Mais il poussait des cris
But he cried out
Comm' si on l'écorchait
As if he was being skinned alive
Et... Chaleureux
And... Warmly
Il lui dit "Cher Monsieur".
He said, "Dear Sir".
Tu as une fleur bleue contondante
You have a blunt blue flower
Je vais la montrer à qui veut

Ta petite fleur bleue
Your little blue flower
Allons tant mieux, tant mieux
Oh well, good for you

Des petits bouts de chansonnettes
For little bits of songs
Ça lui donnait mal à la jambe
It made his leg hurt
Car il frappait du pied
Because he tapped his foot
Pour battre la mesure
To keep the beat
Et ses nouveaux souliers
And his new shoes
Avaient une pointure
Were a size
Un peu trop étriquée
A little too narrow
Qui étriquait son caquet
Which cramped his style
Et... L'éditeur
And... The publisher
Lui dit ah ! quel malheur
Said, oh, what a shame
Ta fleur bleue n'est plus contondante
Your blue flower is no longer blunt
Je sais qu'tu fais ce que tu peux
I know you're doing your best
Je n'voudrais pas être méchante
I wouldn't want to be mean
Mais que veux-tu donc que
But what do you want me to do
Je fass' de ta fleur pédante
With your pedantic flower
Qui n'est plus contondante
That's no longer blunt
Allons tant pis, tant pis
Oh well, too bad

Pour se payer les manuels
To afford the manuals
Traitant de la poésie cruelle
Dealing with cruel poetry
Et la fille du libraire
And the bookseller's daughter
Qui avait su lui plaire
Who he had won over
L'amena sans manière
Brought him there without any fuss
Pour clore cette affaire
To conclude this matter
Devant Monsieur Le Maire
