@Gunny D - True, but she could operate Venoms and Vipers with what's left of the Harrier fleet.

While a step back, either ship could be deployed into lesser areas where the downgrade would be like going from a M1A1 Abrams back to the M60.

And the threats equal to T-54s at worse.

Both could be recommissioned with one serving as a frontline ship and the other assigned to Ferry the new stuff around to be loaded onto the more up to date ships.

Much like USS Long Island CVL-1 and a number of CVEs did back in Inter War Period and the Second World War.

That way the ships can stay out longer while the kit and personnel can be swapped.

Faster than trying to fly everything back and forth since it wouldn't need to be disassembled and reassembled plus mating personnel to their gear as they would have traveled together to begin with.

Would buy time and even get some of that ferry experience back too.

@Epistolary8 There are planning considerations that people tend to overlook on this one, because the issues involved are very much not obvious.

You could be very surprised. Of course, the reality side of it is the underlying domestic production base has atrophied considerably. And on that front, you remain partially correct.

To reach the point where that would be considered even remotely viable, we'd need to be 3 or 4 years into a war with a resolution still appearing to be years in the future.

'Great Power Wars' are not normally that accommodating even in the 19th Century. (Where the US often found the war to be over before the wartime ship construction projects started when the war did could manage to complete)

WW1 and WW2 being the notable exceptions to that, although for the United States, it also had the advantage of being able to sit on the sidelines and beef up capacity while technically remaining neutral in both wars for a couple years in advance. The US won't get that option in anytime in the near future.

Even with the Defense Production Act being invoked and going 'all in' on an accelerated build timeline, it likely would still take several years to build the stuff needed to begin building the needed replacement material in sufficient quantities. But the rate of production for most things could likely be increased considerably without too much trouble, so long as the Defense Production Act is willing to make the consumer market go without a wide range of things.

the automatic fire fighting system, and alarms were switched off for maintenance, fire doors could not be closed do to hoses, ducts, and cables run thru them for the construction. Then to top it off, there WAS NO FIRE WATCH PATROL!

They shut down the automatic system, and decide they didnt need to bother with a fire watch. Command should not have been so reckless.

I work in industry, big factories, and if the automatic fire system needs to be off, we put a person on watch 24/7 in that area. We also impose a fire watch after hot work is done.
Matters not the cause of the fire in the neglect of duty of the ships command in allowing conditions for this total loss fire to erupt. There should be commanders busted down to inmate, then dishonorably booted out for this disaster.

What if a low pay small apartment manager turned off the fire alarm system, and shut off the sprinklers in his building, and a fire broke out? That would be gross negligence, if not criminal.
Dont tell me no one in command is not that stupid. Gross negligence at best, even if it turns out to be an arsonist, the command failed its duty to safe guard the ship.

@Travis Hale was covered with "With no mechanical means of dividing the two spaces, __and the fire suppression system offline due to said overhead work__"

For reference on that:
https://twitter.com/Osinttechnical/status/1282906243548446723

Most of those trusses you see running from right to left in that photo? Those were part of the frame for the scaffolding to enable work in the overhead(and why the fire suppression was off). There would have been wooden planks/boards running between those trusses so that workers could move around up there. If you look to the left of that photo you can see where a section of the scaffolding had collapsed, although the boards evidently didn't completely burn in that portion of Upper Vehicle.

Light source on the left edge of the photo is coming from the sideport the crew would have evacuated through. Light source in the top right of the photo would be coming from the aircraft elevator on the hangar deck. Light source in the center/back would be coming from the stern gate in the welldeck of the ship.

If you make the ramp leading to the Hangar Deck "2 O'clock" then the ramp to Lower Vehicle (the area where the fire started) would roughly be in the 9 O'clock position probably about a dozen feet or so to the left of the photographer. At least going by the Bonhomme Richard Tour video from prior to their going into their fateful yard availability.

Basically. The fire was able to spread through openings that don't normally exist, and fire containment as further hampered by ductwork and cabling strung through doorways which also would have been used to contain the fire.

Where the fire started and initially spread also played an obvious major role in what happened. First rule of firefighting is "Always leave yourself an out(exit)."

Their only _immediately accessible_ means on or off the ship either required transit through Upper Vehicle to use the side-ports(one of which is right next to the ramp into Lower V, and that ramp happens to also be on the same side of the ship that the pier was on) or to head down the ramp into the Well Deck to use the stern gate. (the stern gate didn't appear to have a ramp to get onto the pier at the time, so it wasn't truly an immediate evacuation option--but it was open, which meant the fire had an ample supply of fresh air once it was in Upper Vehicle)

All of the "fire resistant" lumber and plastic sheeting directly overhead in Upper V for work being done in the overhead meant Upper Vehicle was a potential fire hazard at immediate risk from the uncontrolled Lower Vehicle fire. With no mechanical means of dividing the two spaces, and the fire suppression system offline due to said overhead work, their _only_ way off the ship was going to be the second major compartment to catch fire. (Fire resistant wood is not fire proof)

Their only other "normal" option(which also didn't appear to be setup at the time) would have been to egress the ship by way of the Hangar deck and the aircraft elevator if a gangway had been present. There wasn't one by all appearances. Except that location also had the issue that the Hangar deck itself was part of the initial "chimney" for the lower vehicle fire, and I'm unclear on the options they might have had to isolate that space.

After that, their least bad option for embarked crew would be to shelter on the flight deck, and hope the fire wouldn't cook them from below before someone managed to provide them a means to get off the ship.

Evacuation ship shortly after it was clear they weren't going to be able to keep it contained to lower vehicle was the only prudent choice for the Duty Section at the time. They only had the one way to get off the ship, and they were in immediate danger of losing it.

Monday morning quarterbacking on things the command did, or allowed, both in the lead-up to the fire, and during the battle against the fire itself are likely to find a list of issues and things that could have been done differently. By both the command, and 32nd Street once it became directly involved. Some relatively minor ship design issues seem to be somewhat evident as well(only really an issue when the ship is not fully manned and on a wartime footing). It being Arson or not is only a small part of what went wrong here.

People were complacent and lazy, and the taxpayers received a multi-billion dollar bill for the consequences. It will be interesting to see how the Navy tries to write-up this incident, and how many people get thrown under the proverbial bus in the process.

Well they better build a new one. Especially with today's threats, every weapon is essential

Thunderbird 1

They almost certainly will build a new one.

@Kenneth Draper i concur

I wouldn't be surprised if the next America class ship contracted wasn't named Bonnham Richard.

Mr. Pig

This makes me so sad. I served on this ship. She was a great ship, she didn't deserve to go out like this.
Fair winds and following seas Bonnie Dick!

Johnnie Williams

@Travis Rivera I was on her in 2011 until the hull swap in 2012. Which took place in Sasebo Japan

William Schweers

@Mr. Pig We served together than i was in a 53 guy on her as well that first WestPac Avionics
