Béatrice has played the piano since the age of three, which was initiated by her mother, a professional pianist. She later played as a keyboardist in the post-hardcore band December Strikes First when she was 15 years old. In March 2007, after five years of music education, she started composing her own songs.
After a brief stint as keyboardist for Bonjour Brumaire, a French-Canadian Indie Rock/Indie Pop band, she released her solo debut album Cœur de pirate in 2008 on the Québécois independent record label Grosse Boîte. The album found much critical acclaim and was subsequently nominated for Francophone Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards.

What was left down there and more
Hide-and-seek'd for far too long
Kept my treasures with my bones
Lived for lies, lived for tales
Lived for good and hit the rails
Love you, boy, with what I know
Brought a knife to hell and saw
What was left down there and more
Hide-and-seek'd for far too long
Kept my treasures with my bones
Lived for lies, lived for tales
Lived for good and hit the rails
Love you, boy, with what I know
Hid that love with my bones
Found the fire in the rain
Burning drops drowned all my pain
Listen to the ocean's brawl
I'll find you and then I'll crawl
Pierced your arrow through my heart
Wanted me, now want me gone
In your hiding, you're alone
Kept your treasures with my bones
Told me lies, told me tales
Lived for bad, and hit the rails
Hate you, boy, with what I know
Picked my love up with my bones
Found the fire in the rain
Burning drops drowned all my pain
Listen to the ocean's brawl
I'll find you and then I'll crawl
And then I'll crawl
And then I'll crawl
And then I'll crawl
Brought a knife to hell and saw
What was left down there and more
Hide-and-seek'd for far too long
Kept my treasures with my bones
Lived for lies, lived for tales
Lived for good and hit the rails
Love you, boy, with what I know
Hid that love with my bones
And then I'll crawl
And then I'll crawl
And then I'll crawl
And then I'll crawl
And then I'll crawl
And then I'll crawl
The lyrics of "Oceans Brawl" by Cœur de Pirate depict a tumultuous and conflicted relationship. The singer brings a "knife to hell" and witnesses what is left there, indicating a journey into darkness and encountering the aftermath of a destructive situation. The phrase "hide-and-seek'd for far too long" suggests a game of deception and dishonesty that has been ongoing for an extended period.
The singer has lived for lies, tales, and the thrill of rebellion, longing for love but also grappling with the need to hide it. The repeated line "kept my treasures with my bones" implies a guardedness in preserving precious emotions and experiences even in the face of turmoil.
In the second verse, the singer discovers solace in the midst of pain. "Found the fire in the rain" signifies finding passion and strength even during difficult times. The metaphor of "burning drops drowned all my pain" suggests that while the pain is overwhelming, it is also cathartic and transformative.
There is a sense of betrayal in the bridge of the song, as the singer reveals their heart pierced by the arrow of the person they love. The line "wanted me, now want me gone" illustrates a change in the other person's feelings, leaving the singer feeling alone and abandoned. The phrase "hid your treasures with my bones" portrays the singer's sense of having given everything to this love, only to be discarded.
The chorus repeats throughout the song, emphasizing the singer's determination to persevere despite the hardships. The final repetition of "and then I'll crawl" suggests a willingness to push forward despite the pain, indicating resilience and determination to overcome the challenges faced.
