Béatrice has played the piano since the age of three, which was initiated by her mother, a professional pianist. She later played as a keyboardist in the post-hardcore band December Strikes First when she was 15 years old. In March 2007, after five years of music education, she started composing her own songs.
After a brief stint as keyboardist for Bonjour Brumaire, a French-Canadian Indie Rock/Indie Pop band, she released her solo debut album Cœur de pirate in 2008 on the Québécois independent record label Grosse Boîte. The album found much critical acclaim and was subsequently nominated for Francophone Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards.

Into my secret hell
You're screaming at the door
And I can hardly yell
And times are hard, I'm longing to see
A different view where you're longing for me
I hear the sea, it roars
And I want out of here
Our love remains a breaking wave
Nothing's left but the sand
Our love remains a race to the end
Nothing's left but the lies
I hear your song, it calls
But you were never there
All that I know is gone
And I can live again
And times are hard, I'm longing to see
A different view, are you longing for me?
I hear your song, it roars
And I want out of here
Our love remains a breaking wave
Nothing's left but the sand
Our love remains a race to the end
Nothing's left but the lies
Our love remains a breaking wave
Nothing's left but the sand
Our love remains a race to the end
Nothing's left but the lies
I hear the sea, it roars
Into my secret hell
You're screaming at the door
And I can hardly yell
The lyrics to Cœur de Pirate's song "Our Love" depict a turbulent and troubled relationship that is on the verge of dissolution. The singer describes feeling trapped in a metaphorical secret hell, where the sound of the roaring sea symbolizes their internal turmoil. The person they are in a relationship with is shown as screaming at the door, representing their frustrations and anger. However, the singer feels unable to express themselves fully, as they can hardly yell back. This highlights the lack of communication and mutual understanding between the two individuals.
The lyrics also convey a sense of longing for a different perspective and a yearning for a better situation. The singer expresses a desire to see a different view, where the other person is also longing for them. This suggests that both individuals might have lost sight of each other's needs and desires, leading to a disconnect in their relationship. The repetition of the line "And I want out of here" reveals the singer's longing for escape from the current state of their love.
The chorus further emphasizes the deteriorating state of their relationship. The phrase "Our love remains a breaking wave" portrays their love as something unstable and fragile. The reference to "the sand" symbolizes the remnants of what once was, suggesting that their love has been reduced to nothing more than scattered fragments. The line "Nothing's left but the lies" indicates that dishonesty and deception have become prevalent, implying a lack of trust between the two individuals.
Overall, "Our Love" explores the themes of frustration, longing, and the disintegration of a once-strong bond. It portrays a relationship marked by miscommunication and unfulfilled desires, ultimately leading to a sense of hopelessness.
