The Most Beautiful Girl
Charlie Rich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did, was she crying, crying?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry
Tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her that I love her

I woke up this morning, realized what I had done
I stood alone in the cold gray dawn
I knew I'd lost my morning sun
I lost my head and I said some things
Now comes the heartaches that the morning brings
I know I'm wrong and I couldn't see
I let my world slip away from me

So, hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did, was she crying, crying?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry
Tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her that I love her

If you happen to see the most beautiful girl that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry

Tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her that I love her

Overall Meaning

In Charlie Rich's song "The Most Beautiful Girl," the lyrics tell a story of regret and nostalgia. The singer has lost the woman he loves by saying hurtful things and urges anyone who sees her to tell her that he is sorry and in need of her. The song begins with a simple question: "Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?" This opening sets the tone for the entire song, describing the woman as "beautiful" and suggesting that she is the most beautiful woman in the world. The tone then shifts to one of concern, with the singer asking if the woman was crying.

As the song continues, we learn that the singer has made a terrible mistake by pushing the woman away. He describes waking up alone and realizing what he had done, knowing that he had lost his "morning sun," or the light and warmth in his life. The lyrics also suggest that the words spoken in anger were ones that could not be taken back, causing heartache and regret.

Overall, the song is a plea for forgiveness and a desire to make things right. The singer's love for the woman is apparent, and the song leaves the listener hoping that the couple can reconcile.

I was born in 1957 and I thank God for it. I had the opportunity in the 70s to attend concerts, now considered timeless. I'm 66 now, diagnosed with cancer, terminal. In the few months I have left, I'm listening to these classics to bring peace to my soul.

God bless you. I am sorry that you are going through this awful disease that does not discriminate. I have lost many family members to cancer. I pray that you have comfort every day and that you can listen to this fine music throughout your journey.

I'm a black woman who was raised in Central Florida in the '70s. As a small girl, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother who lived in a small country town no one has ever heard of (Greenville, Florida). She had a small radio that she kept on her fireplace mantel and every morning I would wake up to this song. Now, I'm 52, and today I hear this song and it brings back such good memories of much simpler times. Back then in that small town, we didn't think about black and white, or who had more than the other. We were all just country people who were trying to make a way for ourselves. We kept up our homes, worked in our gardens, canned our fruits, played in the woods, waved at strangers, and got excited the one time a week we would go to town to shop, and it was all done to the backdrop of beautiful and timeless music like this song. I'm thankful to have been born at that time. Oh, if we could just go back for a little while.
