Helplessly Hoping
Crosby Stills & Nash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Helplessly hoping
Her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses
Of gentle true spirit
He runs, wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of good-bye
Wordlessly watching
He waits by the window
And wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams
He worries
Did he hear a good-bye? Or even hello?

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for-or each other

Stand by the stairway
You'll see something
Certain to tell you confusion has its cost
Love isn't lying
It's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

They are one person
They are two alone

They are three together
They are for-or each other

Overall Meaning

In "Helplessly Hoping", Crosby Stills & Nash sing about a deeply emotional and complex relationship between two individuals who are struggling to communicate and connect with each other. The lyrics paint a picture of a man and a woman who are both desperately trying to express their love and affection for each other, but are hindered by their own fears and insecurities. The man is represented as a harlequin, or jester, who hovers nearby and waits anxiously for a sign of affection or recognition from the woman. The woman, on the other hand, is depicted as a gentle and spiritual being who is gasping for breath in the midst of her own emotional turmoil.

The chorus of the song is particularly poignant, as it describes the couple's shared existence and their intertwined fates. "They are one person", the lyrics state, "they are two alone, they are three together, they are for each other". This encapsulates the idea that, while these two individuals may be struggling to connect with each other and to communicate effectively, they are nonetheless bound together by a deep and abiding love that transcends their individual struggles.

The verses of the song explore the particular difficulties that the couple is facing in their relationship. The man, for example, is shown to be waiting wordlessly by the window, consumed by his own doubts and fears about the relationship. Meanwhile, the woman is haunted by bad dreams and feeling lost and choked up in the midst of her own emotional confusion. Despite these challenges, however, the two characters are clearly drawn to each other, and the song ends on a note of hope and promise, with the suggestion that they will continue to strive towards connection and understanding in the face of adversity.
