Cherish
David Cassidy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cherish is the word I use to describe
All the feeling that I have hiding here for you inside
You don't know how many times
I wished that I had told you
You don't know how many times
I wished that I could hold you
You don't know how many times
I've wished that I could mold you
Into someone who could
Cherish me as much as I cherish you

Perish is the word that more than applies
To the hope in my heart each time I realize
That I am not going to be the one
To share your dreams
That I am not going to be the one
To share your schemes
That I am not going to be the one
To share what seems to be the life
That you could cherish me as much as I do yours.

Oh I'm beginning to think
That man has never found
The words that could make you want me
That have the right amount of letters
Just the right sound
That could make you hear
Make you see
That you're driving me out of my mind

Oh I could say I need you
But then you'd realize that I want you
Just like a thousand other guys
Who say they'd love you
With all the rest of their lives
When all they wanted was to
Touch your face, your hand
And gaze into your eyes

Cherish is the word I use to describe
All the feeling that I have hiding here for you inside
You don't know how many times I wished that I had told you
You don't know how many times I wished that I could hold you
You don't know how many times I wished that I could mold you
Into someone that could cherish me as much as I cherish you

And I do
Cherish you

Overall Meaning

In his song "Cherish," legendary American artist David Cassidy expresses his profound love for someone he cherishes. He communicates how he longs to tell them how he feels but lacks the courage to do so. He wishes to hold and mold them into someone who would cherish him as much as he cherished them. However, with a heavy heart, he realizes that it may not be possible, and he could only watch as his dreams fade away. Cassidy believes that no man has ever found the right words to express love to the person he desires deeply.

The listener can also perceive how stressed out Cassidy is due to the intensity of his passion for this person. With a constant obsession, he feels as though he is losing his mind, and they are driving him crazy. Despite the suffering, Cassidy cannot help but want them even more with each passing day.

Overall, "Cherish" is a passionate ballad that conveys the innermost desires, emotions and insecurities of someone who has longed to express their love to another person but is too afraid to do so.

I will respectfully say this: David Cassidy's version crushes the original like a grape!
I realized it then almost 50 years ago, & I still believe it now.

I watched his interview with Piers Morgan. What an honest man who opened up his life with courage and conviction. He spoke of a spiritual experience. His grandparents were Christians and David loved them. Like Elvis he failed to live up to the Bible but I believe they were sincere in accepting Christ. Saved by his grace...see you in Heaven David.
