They Can't Stop The Spring
Dervish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The curtain has been raised
The wall no longer stands
And from Lisadell to Latvia
We're singing as one clan

The curtain has been raised
And Europe's all one stage
And the archipelagic icicles
Have melted like the cage

We don't need no party
Just a party band
A continental choir
Singing hand in hand

They might scare the blackbird
But they cannot stop him sing
They may steal the honey
But they'll never steal the sting
They may crush the flowers
Trample every living thing
But they can't stop the spring

They might scare the blackbird
But they cannot stop him sing
They may steal the honey
But they'll never steal the sting
They may crush the flowers
Trample every living thing
But they can't stop the spring

They might scare the blackbird
But they cannot stop him sing
They may steal the honey
But they'll never steal the sting
They may crush the flowers

Trample every living thing
But they can't stop the spring

Overall Meaning

In the lyrics of Dervish's song They Can't Stop the Spring, the concept of unity and the resilience of the human spirit is discussed. The first verse speaks of the raising of the curtain and the breaking down of walls, suggesting a sense of bringing people together. The second verse furthers this idea by mentioning that Europe is all one stage, and the once-divided islands have merged as one.

The chorus describes the obstacles that people may face, such as those who try to silence them or steal from them, but ultimately professes that they cannot stop the spring. Here, the spring symbolizes the natural cycle of growth and rebirth, and implies that no matter what obstacles or challenges may arise, the human spirit will continue to persevere and flourish.

The line "We don't need no party, just a party band" suggests that what is truly important is not the superficial trappings of celebrations, but rather the connection and sense of community that music can provide. The reference to the blackbird and flowers being scared or trampled is a metaphor for the difficulties people may face in their lives, but the underlying message is that even though they may cause damage, they cannot truly stop the continued growth and progress of the human spirit.

Overall, the song promotes the idea of unity and resilience, and serves as a reminder that despite any temporary setbacks or obstacles, people will continue to find ways to band together and move forward.

The Eurovision Song Contest historically is not known for delivering the best songs of Europe, despite its name.
But the general idea is that international (expert) juries choose the best song entered into the competition.

And I do agree that tastes my differ, so there will be a certain degree of doubt about who wins this contest.
In this respect, my taste is not a bit more significant than any other.

But by rating this song last of all, as far as I'm concerned the contest has lost even the last tiny bit of its credibility .....

These lyrics are more relevant than ever! They give hope in these times. They can crush the flower, and trample every living thing, but they can't stop the spring! 🇺🇦☮
One of my all-time favourite ESC songs.

I don't really know why Cathy Jordan struggles with singing in tune here, but I can tell that she's an excellent singer normally, both live and in studio.
