Born into a poor family in Maceió (capital of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil), Djavan formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD - "Light, Sound, Dimension"), playing Beatles covers. In 1973 Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing in local nightclubs. After competing in several festivals he gained attention and recorded the album A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan in 1976. The album included the song "Flor de Lis" which became one of his most memorable hits. Albums that followed included his other musical influence, African music, and additional hits followed like "Açaí", "Sina" and "Samurai", which featured Stevie Wonder's harmonica. His best known compositions are: "Meu Bem Querer", "Oceano", "Faltando um Pedaço", "Esquinas", "Seduzir", "Pétala", "Lilás", "A Ilha", "Fato Consumado", "Álibi", "Azul" and "Serrado".
His songs have been recorded by Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer, and, in Brazil by Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Nana Caymmi, Lenine, João Bosco, Chico Buarque, Daniela Mercury, Ney Matogrosso, Dominguinhos, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Johnny Alf, and other artists. The 1988 Epic Records single, "Stephen's Kingdom", featured a guest appearance from Stevie Wonder.
In 1999, his live concert double-volume album, Ao Vivo, has sold 1.2 million copies and the song, "Acelerou" became the Best Brazilian song of the year at 2000 Latin Grammy Awards.

Enguiçado
Dado a viver
Com a coisa errada
Inclinado a tudo ceder
Se bem combinado
Em qualquer lado pode estar
Que se vai causar
Até treinamento
Pra sair de situação
Sob juramento
Se diz sim
Quando é pra ser não
Vive dando o bote
Em escala abismal
Um a mais, outro mais
Ou cem é normal
Se hoje está ali
É porque aqui não dá
Mais nenhum
Deixou de render algum
Quando vai deixar
De se interessar
Por coisa ruim
Se antes não era assim
Muita falsidade
Pouca glória, nenhum elã
Uma pobre história
Que foi grande
E hoje é anã
Seu comportamento
Desastroso me quebrou
Disse "vou ali, venho já"
Se encantou por lá
Nunca mais voltou
Se hoje está ali
É porque aqui não dá
Mais nenhum
Deixou de render algum
Quando vai deixar
De se interessar
Por coisa ruim
Se antes não era assim
Muita falsidade
Pouca glória, nenhum elã
Uma pobre história
Que foi grande
E hoje é anã
Seu comportamento
Desastroso me quebrou
Disse "vou ali, venho já"
Se encantou por lá
Nunca mais voltou
The lyrics of Djavan's song "Enguiçado" paint a vivid picture of someone who finds themselves trapped in a cycle of poor decisions and misguided actions. The opening lines suggest that this individual, referred to as "nego errado" (wrong guy), is stuck, unable to break free from living a life filled with the wrong things. The repetition of the word "enguiçado" (stuck) emphasizes the sense of being trapped and unable to move forward.
The lyrics delve into the character's tendency to give in to everything and make compromises, even if it means causing harm in the process. There is a sense of resignation and acceptance of their fate, as they are described as always ready to say "yes" even when they should say "no," highlighting a lack of self-awareness and direction.
The imagery of constantly striking at opportunities with reckless abandon, portrayed as "dando o bote em escala abismal" (striking in an abyssal scale), conveys a sense of desperation and a pattern of behavior driven by impulse rather than reason. The repeated references to leaving places where they no longer thrive suggest a pattern of seeking temporary gratification without considering the long-term consequences.
The lyrics also touch on themes of disillusionment and disappointment, as the singer expresses how the character's disastrous behavior has left them broken and abandoned. The imagery of someone promising to return quickly but getting captivated elsewhere, never to return, symbolizes a sense of betrayal and abandonment. The song poignantly questions when this individual will break free from their destructive patterns and stop being drawn to negative influences, reflecting on the contrast between the grandeur of past potential and the current state of insignificance.
