Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Hold Me In your Arms
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Tonight was meant to be
Hold me in your arms
Thrill me with your charms
Your lips were meant for me
Never let me go, suddenly I know
I've never loved before
This is the moment I've waited for
Tonight is only the beginning
Hold me in your arms, forevermore
(Hold me in your arms) hold me in your arms
Tonight was meant to be
(Hold me in your arms)
Thrill me with your charms
Your lips were meant for me
Never let me go, suddenly I know
I've never loved before
With every kiss, my head is spinning
This is the moment I've waited for
Tonight is only the beginning
Hold me in your arms, forevermore
The lyrics to Doris Day's song "Hold Me In Your Arms" convey a sense of longing and desperation for one last moment of connection before a relationship ends. The repetition of the phrase "take me in your arms" expresses the desire for physical closeness and the fear of being left alone.
The lines "let me fill again my hungry heart" and "blind me with your charms" suggest that the singer is willing to overlook any faults or differences in order to be held and loved in that moment. The nostalgia in the lyrics with phrases like "thrill again to your cares of yesterday" and "one hour of gladness that we knew in the past" further emphasizes the desperation for that one last moment of happiness and togetherness.
Overall, the song's lyrics convey a bittersweet message about the pain of heartbreak and the human desire for connection and love, even in the face of an inevitable end.
Line by Line Meaning
Take me in your arms,
Hold me closely and tenderly.
Before you take your love away,
Before you leave me and withdraw your affection.
Take me in your arms
Hold me lovingly and securely.
Before we part.
Before we say goodbye and go our separate ways.
Let me thrill again
Allow me to experience excitement and pleasure once more.
To your cares of yesterday,
To the affection and attention you showed me in the past.
Let me fill again
Permit me to replenish and satisfy.
My hungry heart.
My heart that yearns for your love and affection.
One hour of gladness
A brief period of happiness.
That we knew in the past,
That we experienced before.
One moment's madness,
A fleeting instance of irrational behavior.
Although it be the last, hold me fast.
Even if it is the final time, embrace me tightly.
Blind me with your charms,
Overwhelm me with your attractiveness and charisma.
With all the stardust in the sky,
With all the fanciful wonders and romantic symbolism of the universe.
Take me in your arms,
Embrace me passionately.
And then goodbye.
And then we must part ways for good.
