Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Swinging on a Star
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a mule?
A mule is an animal with long funny ears
Kicks up at anything he hears
His back is brawny but his brain is weak
And by the way, if you hate to go to school
You may grow up to be a mule
Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a pig?
A pig is an animal with dirt on his face
His shoes are a terrible disgrace
He has no manners when he eats his food
He's fat and lazy and extremely rude
But if you don't care a feather or a fig
You may grow up to be a pig
Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a fish?
A fish won't do anything, but swim in a brook
He can't write his name or read a book
To fool the people is his only thought
And though he's slippery, he still gets caught
But then if that sort of life is what you wish
You may grow up to be a fish
A new kind of jumped-up slippery fish
And all the monkeys aren't in the zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
So you see it's all up to you
You can be better than you are
You could be swingin' on a star
The song "Swinging on a Star" by Doris Day is an uplifting tune about the power of choices and the possibilities that exist in life. The lyrics use animals as a metaphor to ask listeners whether they want to settle and be mediocre or reach for the stars and achieve greatness. The opening lines of the song suggest that swinging on a star and carrying moonbeams home in a jar is a metaphor for experiencing life in all its wonder and beauty. It is a call to dream big and aim high, to go after what you want and never settle for mediocrity.
The subsequent verses then compare this ideal way of life to being a mule or a pig or a fish. These animals represent the opposite of what the star-swinging metaphor stands for. Their existence is characterized by ignorance, laziness, and a lack of ambition. However, the lyrics highlight that no one is born a mule or a pig or a fish. One is not limited by their current situation, but rather it is up to them to choose which path to take in life. The chorus repeats the opening lines, emphasizing that it is one's choice to be better than they are now, to reach for the stars and swing on a star.
Overall, the song is a call to action, to be ambitious and always strive for better in life. It is a reminder of the power of choices and the endless possibilities that exist in life.
