Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

I'll String Along with You
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But no angel ever came along
Then one happy afternoon I met you
And my heart began to sing a song
Somehow, I mistook you for an angel
But now I'm glad that I was wrong
(Both)
'Cause angels are so few
But until the day that one comes along
I'll string along with you
I'm looking for an angel
To sing my love song to
And until the day that one comes along
I'll sing my song to you
(Doris)
For every little fault that you have
Say, I've got three or four
(Buddy)
The human little faults that you do have
Just make me love you more
You may not be an angel
But still I'm sure you'll do
(Both)
So until the day that one comes along
I'll string along with you
(Doris)
For every little fault that you have
Say, I've got three or four
(Buddy)
The human little faults you do have,
Just make me love you more
(Doris)
Because you're such an angel
That's why I'm sure you'll do
So until the day that one comes along
I know just what I'll do
(Both)
I'll string along with you
The song "I'll String Along with You" is a delightful love song sung by Doris Day and Buddy Clark. The song encapsulates the feeling of finding a true love, even though it may not be exactly what one was initially seeking. The lyrics describe how the singer had been waiting for an angel all their life but never found one. Then, they met their beloved, and though they initially mistook them for an angel, they are now glad that they were wrong. They then go on to profess their love and admiration for their partner, saying that even though they may not be perfect, they will still "string along" with them until they find their true angel.
The song's lyrics are simple yet timeless, expressing the universal search for love and companionship. The idea that true love is about accepting imperfections and loving someone despite their flaws is a theme that many can relate to. The playful banter between Day and Clark adds to the charm of the song, with each trying to outdo the other in praising their partner's virtues.
Overall, "I'll String Along With You" is a lovely song about finding love in unexpected places and cherishing it for what it is.

All my life I've waited for an angel
I've been hoping for a perfect partner my entire life
But no angel ever came along
But I've never met someone who meets all of my criteria
Then one happy afternoon I met you
But one day I met you and felt something special
And my heart began to sing a song
I fell in love with you and felt a newfound happiness
Somehow, I mistook you for an angel
At first, I thought you were perfect and flawless
But now I'm glad that I was wrong
But now I realize that it's your imperfections that make you special
You may not be an angel
You may not be perfect
'Cause angels are so few
Because perfect people are rare
But until the day that one comes along
But until I find someone who meets all of my criteria
I'll string along with you
I'll continue to be with you and enjoy our time together
I'm looking for an angel
I'm still hoping to find perfection in a partner
To sing my love song to
Someone I can shower with love and attention
And until the day that one comes along
Until I find that person
I'll sing my song to you
I'll direct my love and attention towards you
For every little fault that you have
Despite your imperfections
Say, I've got three or four
I have my own faults, so I don't judge you for yours
The human little faults that you do have
Your imperfections are just part of being human
Just make me love you more
And they make me appreciate you and love you even more
Because you're such an angel
Because you're amazing in your own unique way
That's why I'm sure you'll do
That's why I'm confident that things will work out between us
So until the day that one comes along
Until I find someone who meets all of my criteria
I know just what I'll do
I'll stick with you
I'll string along with you
I'll continue to be with you and enjoy our time together
