’60s-sounding Welsh blues singer Aimee Anne Duffy - known professionally as Duffy - released her debut single Rockferry in December 2007. After relocating to London in 2006, she came to the attention of Rough Trade. She is often compared to late ’60s soul diva Dusty Springfield and has experienced significant mainstream success with the single Mercy reaching #1 in the United Kingdom. The debut album, Rockferry, was released in March 2008, and also made #1 on the UK album chart. Bernard Butler of Suede worked extensively on the album, lending it an authentic and wonderfully produced lush ’60s sound.
The 24-year-old’s debut album, Rockferry, triumphed at the 2009 BRIT Awards for British Album, British Female Solo Artist, and British Breakthrough Act.

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I love you but I gotta stay true
My moral's got me on my knees
I'm begging please
I don't know what this is but you got me good
Just like you knew you would
I don't know what you do but you do it well
I'm under your spell
You got me begging you for mercy
Why won't you release me?
You got me begging you for mercy
Why won't you release me?
I said release me
Now you think that I
Will be something on the side
But you got to understand that I need a man
Who can take my hand, yes I do
I don't know what this is but you got me good
Just like you knew you would
I don't know what you do but you do it well
I'm under your spell
You got me begging you for mercy
Why won't you release me?
You got me begging you for mercy
Why won't you release me?
I said you better release me
I'm begging you for mercy
Just why won't you release me?
I'm begging you for mercy
You got me begging, you got me begging
You got me begging
Mercy, why won't you release me?
I'm begging you for mercy
Why won't you release me?
You got me begging you for mercy
I'm begging you for mercy
I'm begging you for mercy
I'm begging you for mercy
I'm begging you for mercy
Why won't you release me?
You got me begging you for mercy
You got me begging down on my knees
I said you got me begging, begging you for mercy
You got me begging
The song "Mercy" by Duffy ft The Game is about a woman who is caught up in a relationship with a man who is playing games with her emotions. The singer is in love with the man but feels trapped by his actions, and she is begging him to release her from the cycle. The lyrics suggest that the man is not willing to commit to her fully, but rather sees her as someone to keep on the side. The woman, however, is looking for a man who can take her hand and be there for her.
The chorus of "You got me begging you for mercy, why won't you release me?" is a repetition of the desperation the singer feels towards being trapped in this emotional turmoil. She is looking for a way out and wants the man to release her from the addictive emotional pull he has over her. The line "I'm under your spell" shows how the singer is unable to resist this man's pull, but she is aware of his games and is begging him to let her go.
