The Kids On Every Corner
Duffy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If you think you've heard it all before
Write it on the wall
For everyone who thinks they've heard it all
Here's some more
If you grow up to be beautiful and wild
You'll just have to live longer as a child
The universal daughter, heaven made you king
Of the kids on every corner and the queen of everything
And you'll live on for every one who didn't get this far
To sleep through rainy Tuesdays in the back of your car
Everything's the same, some things never change
But we perceive everything has changed
Nothing seems the same so we grieve
Can you believe that they're boarding up the future
Did you get in on time?
Dressed up in nostalgia
Now it's you, it's your turn to shine
The universal daughter, heaven made you king
Of the kids on every corner and the queen of everything
And you'll live on for every one who didn't make it here
To celebrate the garden gate and cheer the end of fear
The universal daughter, heaven made you king
Of the kids on every corner and the queens of everything
And you'll live on for every one who didn't make it here
To celebrate the garden gate and cheer the end of fear
The song "The Kids On Every Corner" by Duffy touches on the themes of youth, nostalgia, time, and change. The opening lines "Write it on the wall / If you think you've heard it all before" express a sense of weariness and cynicism towards the world and its repetitions. The chorus, "The universal daughter, heaven made you king / Of the kids on every corner and the queen of everything," refers to a universal figure of youth, innocence, and possibility. The song is filled with images of children, streets, and rain, evoking a sense of longing for a simpler time, amid an uncertain and constantly changing present.
The lyrics "If you grow up to be beautiful and wild / You'll just have to live longer as a child" suggest that youth and beauty can be a double-edged sword, trapping people in a state of immaturity and vulnerability. As the song progresses, it highlights the contrast between the present and the past, asking the listener to "grieve" for what has been lost. The lines "Can you believe that they're boarding up the future / Did you get in on time?" are a warning about the consequences of neglecting the future and failing to act before it's too late.
Ultimately, the song is about celebrating youth and possibility while recognizing the challenges and uncertainties that come with growing up. The final lines "To celebrate the garden gate and cheer the end of fear" suggest that there is still hope for a better future if we can embrace our vulnerabilities and remember the magic of childhood.
