Whole Lot Of Love
Duffy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel frustrated all the time, over and over
Bittersweet you and me
Ain′t no ways to understand, oh, I believe we'd make it to the end
When you just couldn′t feel

I negociate between love and hate
And I wise up just the same
Try understand feel you can comprehend
I negociate the pain

Took a lot of love to hate you the way I do
Took a lot of love, whole lot of love
Whole lot of love to hate you the way I do
Whole lot of love, whole lot of love

I see regret in your eyes don't call sober
Could deny what you do to me
Hundred times I've asked you to think of me and what more could you do
You just couldn′t hide the truth

I compromise to get back to survive
You won′t see me cry
I give you take that beyond mistake
Show I'm moving on, I′ll be staying strong

Took a lot of love to hate you the way I do
Took a lot of love, whole lot of love
Whole lot of love to hate you the way I do
Whole lot of love, whole lot of love Hear me, yes, I say
Took a whole lot of love to feel this way
Understand that I try
But hate pushed all the love aside

It took a lot of love to hate you the way I do
Took a lot of love, whole lot of love
Whole lot of love to hate you the way I do
Whole lot of love, whole lot of love I negociate between love and hate
I negociate with a whole lot of love
I negociate between love and hate
And I wise up just the same
Took a lot of love to hate you the way I do
Took a lot of love, whole lot of love
Whole lot of love to hate you the way I do
Whole lot of love, whole, whole lot of love

Whole lot of love, whole, whole lot of love
Whole lot of love, whole, whole lot of love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song reveal a complicated relationship between two people who are still in love despite their difficulties. Duffy expresses her frustration and confusion regarding her feelings for her partner. She negotiates between love and hate, trying to understand how to move on, but ultimately deciding that it took a lot of love to hate her partner the way she does.

There's a sense of bitterness in her voice, as she regrets the time and effort that she invested into the relationship, which has been tainted by hurt and pain. She has asked her partner to consider how they have made her feel, but still, they cannot hide the truth. Duffy has to compromise and stay strong by putting distance between them.

The chorus, "Took a lot of love to hate you the way I do," shows the complexity of her feelings. It's not easy to let go of someone that you once loved and cherished, but sometimes, it's necessary when the relationship has become toxic. This is a song about love, its beauty and its ugliness, and how it can be hard to move on from, even when it's vital for our well-being.

She's got a 60's voice (think: Lulu, sort of) but the drive to this piece is haunting. I could walk a million miles the wrong way in the dark and with this in my ears I'd smile the whole way and never tire!

Chrysalis Sartorious this genre is called Blue Eyed Soul. It's white people soul music. Good stuff.
