Eldorado
Electric Light Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here it comes another lonely day.
Playing the game, I'll sail away
On a voyage of no return to see
If eternal life is meant to be,
And if I find the key, to the eternal dream.
The painted ladies of the Avalon.
Play in the sun, take to the road
To the north there lies the chills of cold,
To the south there lies, the tales
untold,
But in between their lies, the place
to close your eyes.

And I will stay, I'll not be back,
Eldorado,
I will be free, of the world
Eldorado

Say goodbye the city's heroes sing
Bird on the wind,
Feel, feel so free
Through the life upon the rooftop
haze,
All the cheating and the broken days,
So through it all I see,
There's nothing left for me.

And I will stay, I'll not be back,
Eldorado,
I will be free, of the world
Eldorado

Sitting here on top of everywhere,
What do I care,
Days never end.
I know the voyage's end will soon
be here,
No eternal life is here for me,
And now I found the key,
To the eternal dream.

Then I will stay, I'll not be back,
Eldorado.

I will be free, of the world,
Eldorado

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Electric Light Orchestra's song Eldorado tell the story of a man looking for eternal life and freedom from the world. He is embarking on a voyage of no return to find the key to eternal life, hoping to find it in the painted ladies of Avalon, a mythical place of beauty and wonder. The narrative takes the listener on a journey to the north and south, where the chills of cold and untold tales lie. However, in between these extremes lies a place to close your eyes, a place of peace and rest.

As the song progresses, the singer realizes that nothing in the world can bring him eternal life or satisfaction. He longs to be free from the city's heroes, the cheating, and the broken days. Sitting on top of everywhere, he doesn't care about anything anymore. He finds that his voyage's end is coming soon, and he knows that he won't find eternal life. However, he comes to realize that the key to the eternal dream was within him all along, and he will stay in Eldorado and be free from the world.

Overall, the song Eldorado tells a compelling story of one's journey to find eternal life and freedom from the world. It highlights the futility of material possessions and the importance of finding peace within oneself.

I first heard this album back in the 70's and was captivated by it - I had never heard a rock opus anything like it and haven't to this day. Joe Walsh called Jeff Lynne a musical genius and he's a fabulous vocalist as well.

I wrote one of my first college essays on this album! Granted, I did it in an hour and I could certainly do better but seriously this album is so much fun to sit down and analyze, I love it so much.

Joe Whiteside

I just wrote a college essay on this album.

I never would have considered such a subject! As much as I love the group/music I wouldn't know how/where to start. Kudo's to you and your creativity!

Few works make me smile and almost cry at the same time. This is one of those magnificent works. That's the power of music, doing what it is supposed to do, touching the human soul the way it should be touched. I'm sure Beethoven, and many other great composers are smiling down on ELO, proud to have been part of the human race. In my novel, Soothing The Savage Beat, by E. Augustine, I tell of the power of music in any era, but most importantly, how great, sensible, meaningful music in a dystopian future will be vital to restoring sanity to a world gone mad. It's Mad Max and Clockwork Orange in one! Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart come to the rescue! Maybe Bach is the future. But the future depends on what we remember. Sadly, however, it seems our memories are failing us, fading away with beautiful music.
