The band eventually broke up in 1996 and Bunbury started his solo career in 1997 with a techno album, Radical Sonora with his new band: Copi (piano), del Moran (bass), Ramón Gacias (drums) and former Héroes del Silencio guitarrist Alan Boguslavsky.
Recognized by his wish to always reinvent himself, Bunbury released in 1999 the album Pequeño, which sounded much different than anything he did before. His band also suffered changes, Boguslavsky was replaced by Rafa Domínguez, and the new faces, Ana Belén Estaje (violin), Luis Miguel Romero (percussion), Javier Iñigo, Javier García Vega & Antonio Ríos in the metal instruments.
This band was known as the "Huracán Ambulante" ("Rambling Hurricane") and recorded with Bunbury the rest of his solo discography, (except Antonio Ríos).
In 2005, after 8 years together, Bunbury dissolved the band and declared that will record a new album in 2006 only with his voice and a piano. Nevertheless, in early 2006 he recorded an album with spanish artist Nacho Vegas by the name of El tiempo de las cerezas.
His old band, Héroes del Silencio, reunited in 2007 for a short tour which visited Latin America, United States and Spain.

The lyrics to Enrique Bunbury's song "La Chica Triste Que Te Hacía Reír" translate to "The Sad Girl who Made You Laugh". The song is about a man who is reflecting on his past and the choices he has made. He imagines what his life would have been like if he had chosen a different path and taken fewer risks. He mourns the loss of the girl who used to make him laugh and wonders if they could have had a future together if he had made different choices.
The first verse talks about how if he had chosen an easier path, he could have held onto his northern hat and the girl who used to make him laugh. The second verse talks about how they both had a thirst that led them to the same bars, even though they didn't love each other. He imagines that if he had made different choices, he could have held onto his full pockets and the girl who used to make him laugh.
The chorus is a repeated plea not to take him to the hospital. He doesn't distrust the hospitals themselves but is warning to not take him there. He argues that he is already better.
The third verse talks about how as he has aged, he has become freer because he has less to lose. The final verse talks about how there is always a new opportunity waiting on the frontier, but he hopes that one day he will be reunited with the girl who used to make him laugh.
Overall, the song is a lament for a lost love and a reflection on the choices that led him to where he is today.

Si no te gustara tanto meterte en líos,
If you didn't enjoy getting into trouble so much,

Conservarías el sombrero norteño,
You would keep your Northern hat,
And the sad girl who made you laugh.
Even though you didn't love her and neither did she,
