Their debut release for Unlabel, the 'Weather For Lighting Matches' EP was released in December 2004. The track 'Soleil' from this EP also features on the 'Minus 27 and Counting...' compilation CD, which was released on the same day.

They disbanded in 2005 with Karl Brummer becoming Belt Motel.

Mitski has said that at least some of her songs aren't autobiographical. But I do think that she has been through a lot of pain, simply because she understands and conveys it so well. I think some of her songs are about situations she experienced but I think some are imagined experiences/stories inspired by feelings she experienced.

quite honestly, I've been listening to this song on repeat for a few weeks and I think I've finally come up with a decent theory on what I think the song is about. it sounds like a song about a girl who is a stripper (I'll explain), a prostitute, or maybe just in some type of sexual relationship where she has fallen in love with the other person but they can't be together. About the person being a stripper, I only say this because of the first few lines like "take off my clothes and watch me move" and "blue light, dark room". If you really pay attention to the lyrics, it doesn't sound like she is in any type of abusive relationship. Lines like "my heart wants to hold you but I know the rules" and "I'll sell my heart to you...what's my price...how about just a part of you" really supports my idea that this girl wants to be in a real relationship with the other person but something is blocking her (my guess is some type of agreement or contract that you would have with a stripper/prostitute or a f*ck buddy you are seeing). I also think that maybe the other person might have the same feelings as this girl (not sure if I should be calling this girl Mitski or not) but I'm still on the fence. I get this feeling from this line "But your skin did you notice your skin it cries a soft weep like mine". So that's pretty much what I think that line means and that's all I have. I wasn't able to find a good solid theory on what the meaning behind this song was and thought I should write one up. Then one morning, I was listening to it and it all clicked for me. My interpretation of the song is her submitting to a man, letting him do whatever he wants to her because she loves him. Originally, he hurt her.. she still asks for help and as she sees how obedient he was and didn’t mind helping, that made her forgive him. Still remembering how she’s being used like this is a little game, she questions how long they can keep playing this way.. how long can we keep seeing each other like this? hooking up?, she craves his love, her heart wants him. The “rules” are her not being able to fall for him, since he’s just there for pleasure but it’s changed.. still she suppresses her feelings towards him, or at least- tries to. As she gets hurt again, he smiles at her shaken up body. Little does he know, she knows all too well that he’s hurting as well.. his skin cries like hers.

She offers to sell her heart to him, something you NEED to have or else you’d die, that’s how far she’d go for someone like Eric. She asks for a part of him, she wants him to feel the same way.. that’s why she wants a part of him because it wouldn’t be fair if she just gave up her heart only for him to run away with it. Eric has been doing that all along though, continuously leading her on.

I feel like this song is connected with happy liquid smooth and I want you because in liquid smooth mitski was desperate for love she didn’t feel like a human, she kept using examples as a bloom or etc as if it needs to be touched or used before it blossoms or something like that and when it comes to happy the meaning is about how a woman would treat her man as giving herself just to feel happy even though the man is cheating with another woman. and the I want you is about how she can’t move on and how she’s stuck with Eric and can’t leave him because it would hurt his feelings
