While doing an incredible job for NRK traveling around and reporting, he also raised money for a Norwegian coastal rescue service (redningsselskapet). He also started recording tunes he learned on his journeys around the country and the world. This resulted in many recordings . Erik Bye was voted to be the 3'd most important Norwegian citizen of all time in 2005. He died in 2004.
He will always be known for the humour and radiation of positive energy.

I skyggen av Akershus
En tanke før sol e eg våken
Og lunke litt grut i mitt krus.
Mitt bål er den første lampå
Som gløde i søvnens by.
Men over meg svulmer en himmel
Alt svanger med kommande gry
Snart står de i klar profil
Med baugar som glefser mot fjorden
Og hungrer mot salte mil.
Hørr, fuglane våkne i muren
Iblandt vanke venlige ord
Og fanger jeg ål under bryggå,
Då selle eg ålen til Nils
Og sette meg høgt opp på vollen
I fred for å nyta min pils
Og der flamme blomster i graset
Og der syns jeg verden er god
Især når eg kan kjenner våren
Igjønå kvert hål i min sko
Men nå har visst byen blitt våken
Se kranane strekke hals
Snart myldre alt folket mot lyset
Og kverdagens vettlause vals
Og då søker Ole til skyggen
Av parkens barmhjertige tre
Konstabelen riste på håve
Men lar meg få bli der jeg er
Farvel, jeg må børsta av jakkå
Og gnukka litt lort av min hud
For jeg er en svært gammal herre
Og rein vil eg møta min gud
Erik Bye's "Oles Vise" is a beautiful and contemplative song that is deeply rooted in nature and the simple pleasures of life. In the first verse, the singer talks about waking up early and making a fire in the shadow of Akershus, a medieval castle in Oslo, Norway. He brews some gruel in his mug and watches as the city gradually wakes up around him. He observes ships and their shadows on the fjord and the birds that fly overhead.
As the song progresses, the singer reflects on his own life and the struggles he has faced. He talks about working hard like the boys at Akers mek (a shipyard in Oslo) and pulling feathers from his chest. He talks about how he is now old and content to live a quiet life, enjoying the little things like feeding the birds and picking flowers. He also talks about catching eels and selling them to his friend Nils, then sitting in the grass with a beer and admiring the flowers.
Towards the end of the song, the singer senses the bustle of the city around him and retreats to the shade of a tree in the park. He notes how the constable shakes his head at him but allows him to stay. He bids farewell to the listener, saying that he must brush off his jacket and clean himself up because he wants to meet his maker with a clean soul.
"Oles Vise" is a poignant and timeless song that celebrates the beauty of nature and simple pleasures. It is a reflection on aging and the importance of finding joy in everyday life, even in the midst of difficulties. The song's themes of resilience, simplicity, and appreciation for the natural world resonate with listeners of all ages and backgrounds.

Så nører jeg atter ein nying
I am starting a new fire once again
I skyggen av Akershus
In the shadow of Akershus fortress
En tanke før sol e eg våken
I wake up before the sun with a thought
Og lunke litt grut i mitt krus.
And I warm up some porridge in my cup
Mitt bål er den første lampå
My fire is the first light in the sleeping city
Som gløde i søvnens by.
That glows in the city of sleep
Men over meg svulmer en himmel
But above me swells a sky
Alt svanger med kommande gry
Full of the upcoming sunrise
Se skipenes strenge skygger
See the strict shadows of the ships
Snart står de i klar profil
Soon they will be in clear profile
Med baugar som glefser mot fjorden
With bows that snap towards the fjord
Og hungrer mot salte mil.
And they hunger for salty miles
Hørr, fuglane våkne i muren
Listen, the birds wake up in the wall
Der fløy alt de første vekk
Where the first ones flew away
Ja, stakkars de må vel på arbeid
Yes, poor things, they must go to work
Som gutta på Akers mek
Like the guys at Akers mechanical workshop
Som dem har jeg slitt så det kjentes
Like them, I have worked so hard it was felt
Og nappa dun av mitt bryst
And pulled down feathers from my chest
Men nå har jeg blitt så gammal
But now I have gotten so old
Og lever som Ole har lysst
And live as Ole has wished
Sitt stilt og skrem ikke småfuglen
Sit quietly and don't scare the small bird
De pleie å komma her nå.
They usually come here now.
De vett eg har brød i lommå
They know I have bread in my pocket
Og vett at de pleier å få
And know that they usually get some
Og brødet det fekk eg av Hansen,
And the bread I got from Hansen,
En ærlig stavangermann,
An honest man from Stavanger,
Som stjele litt snadder i bysså
Who steals some goodies in the kitchen
Og gir meg sånn dann og vann
And gives me such things as salmon and water
Og ellers så plukke eg blomster
And otherwise I pick flowers
Og pynter på Gullfiskens bord
And decorate the table of the goldfish
Iblandt vanke salt kjøtt og erter
Sometimes salted meat and peas are available
Iblandt vanke venlige ord
Sometimes friendly words are available
Og fanger jeg ål under bryggå,
And if I catch an eel under the bridge,
Då selle eg ålen til Nils
Then I sell the eel to Nils
Og sette meg høgt opp på vollen
And sit high up on the hill
I fred for å nyta min pils
In peace to enjoy my beer
Og der flamme blomster i graset
And there flames flowers in the grass
Og der syns jeg verden er god
And there I think the world is good
Især når eg kan kjenner våren
Especially when I can feel the spring
Igjønå kvert hål i min sko
In every hole in my shoe
Men nå har visst byen blitt våken
But now the city seems to have woken up
Se kranane strekke hals
See the cranes stretching their necks
Snart myldre alt folket mot lyset
Soon all the people will swarm towards the light
Og kverdagens vettlause vals
And the senseless dance of everyday life
Og då søker Ole til skyggen
And then Ole seeks the shade
Av parkens barmhjertige tre
Of the park's merciful tree
Konstabelen riste på håve
The constable shakes his head
Men lar meg få bli der jeg er
But lets me stay where I am
Farvel, jeg må børsta av jakkå
Goodbye, I have to brush off my jacket
Og gnukka litt lort av min hud
And rub off some dirt from my skin
For jeg er en svært gammal herre
Because I am a very old man
Og rein vil eg møta min gud
And I want to meet my God clean

Jeg leser biografien om Erik Bye hvor han beskriver bakgrunnen til denne visa. For en personlighet Erik var og han hadde en utrolig evne til å komme i kontakt med alle lag i befolkningen. Jeg anbefaler boken på det beste!
