Habaytak Besayf
Fairuz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

Fairuz's song Habaytak Besayf, translated to "I loved you in the summer" in English, is a poignant love story that speaks of the intensity of love and the longing that persists even after years of separation. The song starts with the verses, "I loved you in the summer, in the days of cold and rain, the pavement was a lake and the street was flooded. That girl would come from her old house, and he would say to her, wait for me, and she would wait on the road. He would go and forget her, and she would freeze in the rain."

The lyrics depict a scene where two lovers meet on the street, with the man asking the woman to wait for him as he has to leave. The woman waits for him as promised, but he never returns. As time passes, the woman can't forget the man, and her love remains just as strong. In the subsequent verses, she talks about waiting for him in both summer and winter, each season symbolizing the different emotions she has felt while waiting for him.

The song was written and composed by the Rahbani brothers, who were known for their collaborations with Fairuz. It was released in 1970, and it quickly became a classic in the Arab world, loved for its melancholic, slow melody, and poignant lyrics. The song is performed in the Nahawand maqam, which is a common maqam used in Arabic music.

The story of this song 😋

"Fairuz doesn't forget anything, no matter how small it was" (Assi Rahbani)

Before they got married, Assi Rahbani once had an appointment with Fairuz so they can go record a song, but he was late that night, And by some chance, it rained, so for 20 years Fairuz still kept reproaching and reminding Assi at every argument between them saying: "did you wait for me under the rain?"
Then at some point Assi found himself writing this song for her, and when she read it for the first time she looked at him smiled and said "Now I forgive you"

Btw sadly assi died at 1986
Fairus still alive she's 86 this year (1935)

In cold days, and in rainy days

the sidewalk is like a lake, and the street is sinking under water

comes a girl from her old house

and he tells her to wait for him, and she waits at the street

and he goes and forgets about her, while she withers in the rain

I loved you in summer (clear days), I loved you in winter (rainy days)

I waited for you in clear days, I waited for you in rainy days

and your eyes are clear like summer, and mine are wet like winter

our meeting my love

will be beyond the summer and winter

The stranger passed by, she gave me a letter

which was written by my lover, written by sad tears

I opened the letter, its letters are lost

and the days passed, and the years made us more distant

and the letter's letters were erased by rain

I loved you in summer (clear days), I loved you in winter (rainy days)

I waited for you in clear days, I waited for you in rainy days

and your eyes are clear like summer, and mine are wet like winter

our meeting my love

will be beyond the summer and winter

will be beyond the summer and winter

.
