My Friend
Frankie Laine Lyrics

( My friend my friend my)
My friend
backing( My friend)
Is the king of all kings
My friend
backing( My friend)
Rules the earth and the sun
And yet my friend stops to guide me
My friend takes my hand
Just when all appears in vain
And makes it plain
Through joy or pain
He'll remain
My friend
My friend tells me life is a road
And though it ends
At the bending
My friend
Tells then there's a road beyond this road
That is unending
Some day when I walk up the happy road that lies
Around the bend
Who will there be
To welcome me
My friend
musical interlude and backing
Some day when I walk up the happy road that lies
Around the bend
Who will there be
To welcome me
My friend
Frankie Laine's “My Friend” is a beautiful tribute to a best friend who is not only human, but also much more than a human being. The song's lyrics suggest that the friend referred to is actually God himself, who is exalted as a king above all kings and controls the earth and the sun. However, God is also portrayed as a compassionate friend who walks beside the singer, guiding and comforting him through life's ups and downs. Even when things seem difficult or impossible, God is always there to offer support and strength. The song's lyrics also suggest that life is a journey that ends at a bend in the road, but there is another road beyond that which is unending, and God will be there to welcome the singer when he finally reaches that destination.
Overall, this song is a powerful statement of faith and a moving tribute to the enduring power of friendship, whether it's with another person or with a spiritual entity. The lyrics draw on a strong religious tradition of viewing God not just as a ruler or judge, but also as a compassionate and caring friend who is there for us in all of life's many twists and turns. By presenting this image of God as a close friend and confidant, the song reminds us that we are never truly alone in the world, and that even in our darkest moments, we have a friend who will always be there to guide, comfort, and protect us.

Praise the Lord for the voices He shared with us...I love this song and cry everytime I hear it whether by him or Mahalia Jackson. Two beautiful and well used gifts during their visit on earth. To God be all the Glory.

When Frankie appeared ( which he many a number of times!) at the Palladium, insstead of the comfort of a posh hotel in the welt end, he stayed with a couple in Bromley who his friends! He sat with sleaves rolled up round the fire and then donned his tuxedo and stood like the 'king' he was before the crowds on stage! A lovely, humble & Christian man!
