That's How It Goes
Frankie Laine Lyrics

It makes you live it makes you die
The wisest man and poor fool knows
With love that's how it goes
It lifts you up it lets you down
It make you king it makes you clown
It lives a day or grows and grows
I didn't know my heart would fall
So helplessly that it could break
My darling if you care at all
Please be kind just for my sake
I'm not a child and I know the score
My heart is yours for evermore
Let's live a while for heaven knows
With love that's how it goes
backing
That's how it goes with love
That's how it goes with love
I'm not a child and I know the score
My heart is yours forever more
Let's live a while for heaven knows
With love
That's how it goes

That's how it goes
The lyrics of Frankie Laine's "That's How It Goes" poignantly capture the essence of love - the way it can make one feel a range of emotions, from laughter to tears, from elation to heartbreak, and from feeling empowered to feeling diminished. It is a universal truth that love affects people in different ways, regardless of their level of intelligence or social and financial status, as the lyrics suggest in lines "The wisest man and poor fool knows/ With love that's how it goes." The song acknowledges that love is unpredictable, with the potential to lift one's spirits or let them down, create a sense of togetherness or make one feel like an outcast.
The singer in the song admits to the fragility of his heart and acknowledges that love is not without risk, stating, "I didn't know my heart would fall/ So helplessly that it could break." The plea, "Please be kind just for my sake," indicates the singer's vulnerability and need for reassurance in love. Despite the inherent risks, the singer seems ready to commit to a relationship, saying, "My heart is yours forever more/ Let's live a while for heaven knows/ With love, that's how it goes." The song reminds us that love can be both beautiful and painful, but it is a risk worth taking.
