How Insensitive
Harry Connick Jr. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I must have seemed
When she told me that she loved me
How unmoved and cold
I must have seemed
When she told me so sincerely
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to do
What can you do when a love affair is over
Why she must have asked
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to do
What can you do when a love affair is over
Over, over, over
In Harry Connick Jr.'s song How Insensitive, the singer reflects on a past love affair and his own lack of emotional awareness and response in the situation. The lyrics "How insensitive I must have seemed when she told me that she loved me" and "How unmoved and cold I must have seemed when she told me so sincerely" reveal the singer's realization of his own lack of empathy and emotional response towards his former partner. He goes on to question himself, asking "Why she must have asked did I just turn and stare in icy silence? What was I to do?"
The singer's introspection continues in the final lines of the song, "What can you do when a love affair is over? Over, over, over." Wondering what he could have done differently and regretting his own inability to understand his former partner's feelings, the singer ultimately accepts the end of the relationship.
Throughout the song, Connick Jr.'s smooth, jazzy vocals and poignant piano playing add to the emotional weight of the lyrics. The overall effect is a hauntingly beautiful reflection on the experience of lost love and the regret that can come with it.
