Mostly shunned by television and radio, he has built through word of mouth and frequent touring a considerable following over the years, which allowed him to fill the 17,000-seater Palais Omnisport de Bercy for an anniversary concert in 1998. In recent years he has been increasingly name-dropped as an influence by the latest generation of performers in France, and was the subject of a tribute album of covers in 2002. He has been performing since the late 1960s and releasing records since 1978.
His parents sent him to a catholic boarding school. He spent few years there, where being singled out by his schoolmates started to be interested in great poets (such as Rimbaud) and writers. The catholic education he received will leave its mark on him. He became nonconformist; he wrote blasphemous lyrics, such as "Au nom du Pere, au nom du vice, au nom des rades et des mégots" (In the name of the Father, in the name of vice, in the name of the cafés and the (cigarette) butts), made biblical and latin references in "Femme de Loth" and many others. Musically, H-FT draws mostly from classic rock, with rare nods to the latest musical trends, and generally leaves the arranging to a collaborator. But his songs are most notable for instantly recognisable lyrics, with their trademarks streams of consciousness, surreal and often extreme or dark imagery, often tinged with comedy, cynicism, literary references, neologisms and liberal use of scientific, long or foreign words. The lyrical mayhem sometimes spreads into comically long song titles, such as Enfermé dans les cabinets (avec la fille mineure des 80 chasseurs), or Exercice de simple provocation avec 33 fois le mot « coupable ».
His avowed influences include Léo Ferré, Lou Reed, and many French, Anglo-saxon and German novelists and poets, with a preference for romantic litterature.

De retour à Marseille
Comme un affreux cargo
Chargé d'étrons vermeils
Dérive en immondices
A travers les égouts
La beauté fut assise
Un soir sur ce genou
Horreur Harrar Arthur
& tu l'as injuriée
Horreur Harrar Arthur
Tu l'as trouvée amère
.../... la beauté ?
Une saison en enfer
Foudroie l'Abyssinie
Ô sorcière ô misère
Ô haine ô guerre, voici
Le temps des assassins
Que tu sponsorisas
En livrant tous ces flingues
Au royaume de Choa
Horreur Harrar Arthur
Ô Bentley ô châteaux
Horreur Harrar Arthur
Quelle âme, Arthur, est
.../... sans défaut ?
Les poètes aujourd'hui
Ont la farce plus tranquille
Quand ils chantent au profit
Des derniers Danakils
Juste une affaire d'honneur
Mouillée de quelques larmes
C'est quand même un des leurs
Qui fournissait les armes
Horreur Harrar Arthur
T'es vraiment d'outre-tombe
Horreur Harrar Arthur
& pas de commission
Horreur Harrar Arthur
& pas de cresson bleu
Horreur Harrar Arthur
Où la lumière pleut
The song "Affaire Rimbaud" by Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine tells the story of the French poet Arthur Rimbaud's turbulent life. The first stanza refers to Rimbaud's leg, which he injured in a drunken fight with his lover, the poet Paul Verlaine. After the incident, Rimbaud returned to Marseille with his injured leg, "like a horrible cargo loaded with red excrements." The description of Rimbaud's leg as an "affreux cargo" suggests a sense of disgust and the idea that Rimbaud's life, much like the state of his leg, was in a state of deterioration. Despite this, the singer notes that beauty once sat on Rimbaud's leg, indicating that the poet was once revered for his aesthetic and artistic contributions.
The second stanza of the song discusses Rimbaud's time in Africa as a gunrunner, where he supported the emperor of Ethiopia by providing him with weapons to fight against the British invading forces. The lines "Horreur Harrar Arthur/ & tu l'as injuriée/ Horreur Harrar Arthur/ Tu l'as trouvée amère" suggest a sense of regret on Rimbaud's part, as he may have realized the horrors of war and the role he played as a supplier of arms. The stanza ends with the question, "la beauté?" which implies that Rimbaud's actions went against his own sense of aesthetic beauty.
The third stanza discusses the current state of poets, who sing songs of love and honor in exchange for profit. The line "C'est quand même un des leurs/ Qui fournissait les armes," shows that poets have become complicit in the violence and bloodshed currently occurring in the world. The song ends with the repeated lines, "Horreur Harrar Arthur/ où la lumière pleut," which suggests that Rimbaud's legacy continues to live on and that his contribution to society, both good and bad, cannot be easily forgotten.
