Et des bois de pin
Rien de bien malin, il y a
Des ruisseaux, des clairières
Pas de quoi en faire
Un plat de ce coin, il y a
Des odeurs de menthe
Et des cheminées
Des jours et des nuits lentes
Et l'histoire absente
Banalement
The song "Il y a" by Jean-Jacques Goldman is a celebration of rural life, of the beauty and simplicity found in a small town. The lyrics describe the various natural elements—thyme, heather, pine trees, streams, and clearings—that populate the landscape. There are also human elements—children, grandmothers, a small church, a grand café, and a cemetery—that add meaning to life. Goldman notes the slow pace of life, the absence of grand history, and the ordinary existence of those who live there.
The chorus, "Et loin de tout, loin de moi, C'est là que tu te sens chez toi," or "And far from everything, far from me, that's where you feel at home," encapsulates the longing for simplicity and connection that is inherent in the song. The verses paint a picture of a small town that is familiar and welcoming, where memories and emotions are tied to concrete things like smells and sounds—mint, woodsmoke, and the steady beat of one's own heart.
The final verse goes beyond mere description to reflect on the deeper significance of feeling at home in a place. The harsher the land, the greater the love for it. Rural life is hard work, but it is work that is necessary and meaningful, that provides a sense of purpose and belonging. This is what makes rural life so special—the fact that the land and the people who work it are interconnected, bound together in a cycle of labor and love that defines the essence of life itself.
Overall, "Il y a" is a testament to the importance of community and connection, to the value of hard work and simple pleasures, and to the beauty that can be found in even the most ordinary things.
