In 1961 he married Christine Sèvres. During his carrer, Ferrat has had some difficulty with the authorities owing to his humanist perpective and links with communism.
His most famous songs are: Que serais-je sans toi, Heureux celui qui meurt d'aimer, Potemkine, La montagne, Les feux de Paris, L'amour est cerise and many others.
His lyrics are very much influenced by french poet Aragon.
Qui vivra verra
Jean Ferrat Lyrics

J'habitais la Puerta del Sol
Cette place comme un grand vide
Attendait quelque nouveau Cid
The first stanza of this song describes the Puerta del Sol square in Madrid as being empty and waiting for a hero like El Cid to come and rid the square of the poor and the beggars who are thrown scraps by passersby. The singer asks to be shown the Spanish people, implying they are suffering under their current circumstances. The refrain "qui vivra verra" which translates to "he who lives, will see" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the idea that time will tell what the future holds. The second stanza describes the singer's travels through small towns with terraced fields in the air, where the wind that puts kings to flight lashes a donkey of misery towards the Escorial. This imagery suggests that the people in these towns are oppressed and forced to live in poverty under the rule of the powerful. The third stanza speaks about the cry of the oppressed people that cannot be expressed in words, but is heard in the night by those who are listening. The cry is described as coming from the depths of their suffering and the martyrdom of their lives, which is as painful as a knife that is plunged into their backs. The fourth and final stanza of the song shifts focus to Granada, where the Gypsies mime love to the sound of nomadic guitars. The singer suggests that this is a moment of respite from the oppression and illustrates the longing for freedom and an escape from their current circumstances. The refrain is repeated again, implying that only time will tell what the future has in store for the Spanish people.
