Miss the Mississippi and You
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm growing tired of the big city's lights
Tired of the glamor and tired of the sights
In all my dreams I am roaming once more
Back to my home on the old river shore

I am sad and weary far away from home
Miss the Mississippi and you, dear
Days are dark and dreary everywhere I roam
Miss the Mississippi and you

Rolling the wide world over
Always alone and blue, blue
Nothing seems to cheer me under heaven's dome
Miss the Mississippi and you

Oh-del lay-ee oh-del lay-ee
Dee oh lay-ee oh-del lay-ee
Oh-del lay-ee oh-del lay-ee
Oh-del-ee-del lay-ee

Memories are bringing happy days of yore
Miss the Mississippi and you
Mockingbirds are singing 'round
The cabin door miss the Mississippi and you

Rolling the wide world over
Always alone and blue, so blue
Longing for my homeland, muddy water shore
Miss the Mississippi and you

Oh-del lay-ee oh-del lay-ee
Dee oh lay-ee oh-del lay-ee

Mississippi and you

Brought tears to my eyes.... Used to play this with my mom on the mandolin and brother on guitar. Wish she could hear me play it on guitar 15 years lateer. Id give anything to be able to sit down and jam with her again. Just figured out that you were the person Jimmy was referring o  when he said Miss the Mississippi & YOU, mom.

HEAR MYSONG

A landmark recording of pure American music. A hallmark of American ingenuity and greatness that seems lost or hidden today. Jimmy is a PIVOTAL FIGURE in American music bridging the formative years with the modern era. Very few songs hit the heart stings in the way this song does. I hope you are still strumming and humming Jimmy in a better world.
