Guy can play his ass off...but even as a Dream Theater fan, I have to say there is not a single keyboard part he has ever played that I would consider tasty or melodic. Speed all day long, but he has never figured out that simple can be harder but more impactful.

He has mastered the technique certainly and is a great player, although I think he is sometimes too busy trying to display speed and technique at the expense of feel and musicality. He would be better if he toned it down a bit sometimes, which would give the flashy parts more impact (same with a guitarist not constantly shredding) - just my opinion!

True story: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star is the first song that I ever learned to play by ear on my cousin's little air organ/piano "thingy" at 8 years of age back in 1981. My aunt heard me playing the song, and she asked me where I learned that. I told her that I had just figured it out, and she said, "Your father could do that and play anything". She said that I could have the little piano because my cousin never played it anyway. Her brother (my father) was a naturally gifted musician who was the lead guitarist of his band in Houston, Texas called "The Poor Souls" until he tragically lost his life on his job due to electrocution from a faulty Graco EM-400 Paint Sprayer at the young age of 22...just one month before I was born. I share his talent for music and consider it a gift from the Almighty to honor my fallen father, and so I haven't looked back ever since. Dream Theater helped me get through the quiet days during AIT (U.S. Army Advanced Individual Training), which in those days came right after U.S. Army Basic Combat Training aka "boot camp". I had never even heard of you guys until I was in AIT at Fort Lee, Virginia in 1993. I love your sound and what you have produced. I find it both inspirational and simply badass. \m/ >.< \m/

To be honest The Dream Theater is one of my latest discoveries. Sounds funny but nobody's perfect. Combination of all of you sounds great, massive great mixture of heavy sound with progressive rock sound. He uses his three fingers and strikes with absurd precision, it's insane. Although Erlkonig requires a lot more sustained playing, so it's definitely harder than that specific bit

He plays repeated notes very fast indeed. In fact this technique existed way before Schubert. It is used in Scarlatti music ( early 18th century) ( sonata K141) where you have to play very fast repeated group of 6 notes using 4 3 2 1 2 1 or 3 2 1 3 2 1 fingering . Martha Argerich plays it at lightning speed ( available on youtube) . Given the classical background of Jordan , I am quasi certain he has played that piece too , which is well known by virtuosos.

I love Jordan's solos in Dance of Eternity, the whole song sounds like an epic boss theme and his parts nasty af🤘. All DT members are monsters of their craft. I can really see that he lives for music, the joy that he has for reminiscing and playing is great, you'd think playing Dance of Eternity would get old after the 700th time playing it but he clearly loves it. Simply a Legend, nothing more to say.

This is the shortened ‘YouTube version’ of his solo tour. It was honestly amazing and so personable to see his personal journey with music. Also got to be in the first people to hear one of his Wired for Madness songs sung. I asked him in our meet and greet to play four notes of the unreleased Distance Over Time album which he laughed at and didn’t do haha.

Just saw Jordan’s show tonight. Fun, informative, awesome and what an incredible player. The guy plays more notes in 90 minutes than most bands do their entire careers. Go out and see him if and when you can!

What a great video. It is spellbinding when someone this good is willing to be open and share their skill journey from "inspired" to "awesome". I had not heard of Jordan Rudess until I stumbled across Liquid Tension Experiment on YouTube. I love that stuff when played loud.

Jordan Rudess is such an amazing keyboardist. I still can’t believe that he’s 64 years old. I’m a big Dream Theater fan. Jordan has been the keyboardist for Dream Theater since 1999 and he’s been creating some amazing keyboard melodies for the band ever since. He’s responsible for give DT their melodic side within progressive metal.🤘🏾🎹
