Out of Your League
John Wesley Lyrics

some kind of rare deed done on time
what mountain crossing have I missed
what sort of barb's attached to your line
Be careful of what you're promising
don't dare look at me with those eyes
you're way out of your mind
you can't be serious
yet you can't be denied
I've watched the sun rise and set
on your deepest regrets
yet you're still off chasing some star
you leave me behind with your heart in my chest
then come home bearing your latest scar
When will you find what you're looking for
don't you know it was here all the time
In John Wesley's song Out of Your League, the singer begins by questioning the validity of the claims made by someone who professes to have done some kind of rare deed. The singer is clearly skeptical and wonders if there's some kind of catch or hidden agenda to their words. Later in the song, the singer admonishes the person to be careful of what they promise and not to look at him with those eyes, which suggests the person might have ulterior motives.
The chorus of the song is blunt and straightforward; the singer tells the person in no uncertain terms that they are way out of their league and out of their mind for thinking they could keep up with him. The singer acknowledges the person's persistence in chasing their dreams and finding what they're looking for, but also expresses frustration at being left behind with their heart in his chest, only for the person to return with the latest scar.
Overall, the song seems to be about the tension between someone who is driven by their dreams and desires, and someone who wants them to stay grounded and remember what's truly important. It's a cautionary tale about the dangers of trying to reach beyond one's capacity and the toll it can take on those left behind.
