He released his first albums under the Jovanotti byname to later switch into his real name (Lorenzo), as of the mid-nineties.
Most of his output is hip-hop influenced, although not most of his work should be viewed as hip hop music per se. Many of his songs are not hip hop related and may probably be best viewed as part of the earlier Italian cantautore tradition. Some of his earlier work is also closer to keyboard-heavy 1980s pop. Most of his songs are sung in the Italian language; he also released a Spanish-language greatest hits album. His live album includes a short version of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Jovanotti appears on several international compilations, most notably Red Hot + Rhapsody, a 1998 tribute to George Gershwin, on which he performed "I Got Rhythm". Jovanotti has also appeared in one Luciano Pavarotti's charity concert in 1996.
His CD, Buon Sangue, includes influences from both rock and old school hip hop. It is one of his most innovative works to date. Edoardo Bennato collaborated on one track, while bass player Saturnino co-wrote two of the songs.
One of his most recent CDs, "Ora", breaks new ground with a new style of production.

Cosa ne sarà di noi
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Dallo stereo sentivo canzoni e imparavo a suonarle cambiandole appena
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Cosa ne sarà di me
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Cosa ne sarà di me
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Cosa ne sarà di noi
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Baby
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Cosa ne sarà di noi
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Cosa ne sarà di noi
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo
Mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo, mumbojumbo

The lyrics to Jovanotti's song "Mumbojumbo" can be interpreted as a reflection on the pursuit of material wealth and power, and the ultimate question of what will become of us in the end. The song tells the story of a protagonist who travels to different markets around the world, acquiring various items and experiences in exchange for his possessions. Each transaction represents a different stage in his journey towards accumulating wealth and knowledge.
The singer starts off in New York, where he buys a Kalashnikov and then trades it in Rio for a stolen guitar and stereo. As he listens to the stereo, he learns to play songs and performs them at the Tokyo market. With his earnings, he buys a boat and sails to England, where he sells it in exchange for a piece of land. He plants vegetables, sells them at a nearby market, and uses the money to take lessons in dance, science, yoga, and mime.
He then continues his journey, giving lessons in mime, dance, yoga, singing, and science in various countries until he has enough money. Along the way, he buys a horse, trades it for a giraffe, and takes it to the Istanbul market to attract the curiosity of the people. He seduces women in harems and finds love, turning from lead to gold. In the Spanish neighborhoods, he buys a notebook already partially written, and it instructs him to continue the story until someone else takes over.
His travels lead him to Tamaraset, where he obtains a camel from a tired nomad and exchanges it for a white suit in the market of Cairo. Disguised as a rich man, he gains access to influential circles and sells his counsel to politicians, priests, and industrialists. With the money, he buys influence and with influence, he collects money. He purchases a country, an army, and a ton of gunpowder. He wages war against the world, hoping to find if there is any good in war. Just before finding the answer, he sells his army to the UN Council.
Finally, he seeks power over time and dreams and visits Zeus, who tells him he can have the power but must give the money to those in need. The singer descends to the plains, buys a cow in the market of Delhi, founds a new religion, and gathers devoted, fanatical, and unfaithful followers. With their offerings, he buys a diamond that constantly changes reflections, symbolizing the ever-changing nature of reality. The song ends with the singer marveling at the infinite diversity within the diamond, as everything he gazes upon reflects a different image, yet remains essentially the same.
Overall, "Mumbojumbo" can be seen as a commentary on the relentless pursuit of material possessions and power, illustrating the futility of these pursuits and posing the question of what truly matters in life.
