His father was a UNESCO employee and his mother is from Guadeloupe. Many of the chansons he sings were written by Étienne Roda-Gil, a long time collaborator. His brother, Gérard Leclerc, is a political commentator on France 2.
For a time he was involved with French actress Miou-Miou, who in 1978 bore him a daughter, Jeanne Herry. Like her father, Jeanne has pursued a career in show business, albeit as an actress and comedian rather than as a singer.
Julien Clerc owes his fame in France to his leading role in the 1969 French language adaptation of the musical Hair. Since then he has sung a great many popular songs, and is generally considered one of the greatest francophone musicians of his generation. In 2003, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after transferring the rights to his hugely popular song, Partir, to the UN.

Sur les guitares
Et quand font rage
Les millibars,
Quand la musique me prend la tête,
Le monde peut cracher sa tempête
Moi, je m'en fous
Mon coeur chavire,
Quand ça me cogne à coups de trompette
Mais je t'en fous
Un cargo de notes, tout un stock,
J'ai le coeur gros, l'âme en loques,
Je ne reconnais plus le haut du bas,
Ça je m'en fous
Mais ça me rend fou
Gare à la casse,
Ça cogne, ça craque,
Ça bing, ça claque,
Ça bat, ça tape,
Ça tangue, ça frappe,
Ça roule, ça choque,
Ça boule, ça piaffe,
King Kong, pif paf,
Aïe, aïe, ah
Aïe, aïe, ah
Je perds conscience,
Mets la sourdine,
Je voudrais le silence
Les mandolines,
Mon pauvre coeur, ma pauvre tête,
Adieu le klaxon des trompettes
Qui me rend fou
Mais quand je me calme pour jeter l'ancre,
Quand c'est fini, ça me manque,
King Kong, pif paf,
Aïe, aïe, ah
Ça cogne, ça craque,
Ça bing, ça claque,
Aïe, aïe, ah
Ça bat, ça tape,
Ça tangue, ça frappe,
Aïe, aïe, ah
Ça roule, ça choque,
Ça boule, ça piaffe,
Aïe, aïe, ah
King Kong, pif paf,
Aïe, aïe, ah
King Kong, pif paf,
Aïe, aïe, ah.
The song Gare à la casse by Julien Clerc talks about the power of music to transport and transform, but also about the risks of giving oneself too much to it. The first verse describes how, during a storm, the singer is absorbed by a rhythm that makes him forget about the world around him. The second verse reinforces this idea, describing how the music becomes overwhelming to the point of causing disorientation and physical distress. The chorus, with its repeated sounds and onomatopoeias, sums up the chaotic and visceral experience of being overwhelmed by music.
The third and final verse brings some nuance to the previous ones, by acknowledging the drawbacks of such an intense emotional exchange. The singer needs the music to keep going, but it also puts him in danger of losing control. The final lines of the song suggest a feeling of both dependence and nostalgia: the music takes away the pain, but also leaves the singer feeling incomplete without it.
Overall, Gare à la casse is a vivid description of the hypnotic and addictive nature of music, but also a warning against the risks of ignoring one's own limits.
