His father was a UNESCO employee and his mother is from Guadeloupe. Many of the chansons he sings were written by Étienne Roda-Gil, a long time collaborator. His brother, Gérard Leclerc, is a political commentator on France 2.
For a time he was involved with French actress Miou-Miou, who in 1978 bore him a daughter, Jeanne Herry. Like her father, Jeanne has pursued a career in show business, albeit as an actress and comedian rather than as a singer.
Julien Clerc owes his fame in France to his leading role in the 1969 French language adaptation of the musical Hair. Since then he has sung a great many popular songs, and is generally considered one of the greatest francophone musicians of his generation. In 2003, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after transferring the rights to his hugely popular song, Partir, to the UN.

Petits pois lardons
Sans qu'on les voie
Lardons petits pois
Petits pois lardons
Lardons petits pois
Goutte-moi ça
Hum c'est bon
Petits pois lardons
Lardons petits pois
Goutte-moi ça
Petits pois lardons
The song "Petits pois lardons" by Julien Clerc is a playful and whimsical tune that tells the story of two people, a man and a woman, who are cooking their respective dishes in their separate homes. The woman is making petits pois, or pease, over a wood fire, while the man is cooking up some lardons, or small strips of bacon, on hot coals. They sing in contrasting styles about their dishes, with the woman calling out "Voila les petits pois" and the man singing in a deep voice, "Chauds mes lardons."
The song then explores the differences between the two characters and their lifestyles, with the man feeling lonely and hoping to take the woman out to dance at the bal des petits pois. However, fate intervenes when the man runs out of coal to cook his lardons and ends up bringing them over to the woman's house where they share their dishes and mix their fingers in the petits pois and lardons.
The song's light-hearted and carefree tone captures the essence of French culture, where food, wine, and good company are celebrated and enjoyed with gusto. It also showcases Julien Clerc's unique talent for storytelling through music.
