The group's earliest incarnation included German drummer En Esch and British vocalist Raymond Watts, the latter of whom left and rejoined the group several times over its history. The trio recorded the band's earliest albums in Germany before Konietzko and Esch moved to the United States, where they found much greater success with seminal industrial record label Wax Trax!. German guitarist Günter Schulz joined in 1990; both he and Esch continued with the band until KMFDM broke up in 1999. Konietzko resurrected KMFDM in 2002 (Esch and Schulz declined to rejoin) on Metropolis Records, and by 2005 he had assembled a consistent line-up that included American singer Lucia Cifarelli, British guitarists Jules Hodgson and Steve White, and British drummer Andy Selway. Konietzko and Cifarelli moved back to Germany in 2007, while the rest of band stayed in the U.S. In addition to these core members, dozens of other musicians have worked with the group across its nineteen studio albums and two dozen singles, with sales totaling in excess of two million records worldwide.
Critics consider KMFDM to be one of the first bands to bring industrial music to mainstream audiences, though Konietzko refers to the band's music as "The Ultra-Heavy Beat". The band incorporates heavy metal guitar riffs, electronic music, samples, and both male and female vocals in its music, which encompasses a variety of styles including industrial rock and electronic body music (EBM). The band is fiercely political, with many of its lyrics taking stands against violence, war, and oppression. KMFDM normally tours at least once after every major release, and band members are known for their accessibility to and interaction with fans, both online and at concerts. Members, singly or working together and with other musicians, have recorded under many other names, primarily Watts' PIG, Konietzko's Excessive Force, and Esch and Schulz's Slick Idiot.

KMFDM Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm not gonna play that role
I don't need you telling me I've got my back against the wall
If all I've got is everything and everything is all you want
If I give you just a little bit you're gonna try to take it all
I feed my anger with the fucking bullshit that you preach
I bleed forever and not a thing you do can comfort me
Obey authority
Live in conformity
I do for you what you do for me
I don't fear the confrontation
I'm not afraid to take the fall
I'm not gonna step aside I'm not letting you make the call
If everything is all I've got and everything is what you want
If I give you just alittle bit you're gonna try to take it all
The lyrics to KMFDM's song Skurk are a strong statement against conformity and blind obedience to authority. The song begins by rejecting the contradictions that society imposes upon us, refusing to play a role that doesn't feel authentic. The singer sees through the façade of people telling them that they have their back against the wall, recognizing it as a controlling tactic to make them feel trapped and helpless. They acknowledge that they have everything they need and won't let anyone take it away from them, even if it means standing up against authority.
As the song progresses, the intensity grows. The singer expresses their anger and frustration at the "fucking bullshit" that society preaches, which only serves to fuel their anger. They acknowledge that nothing anyone does can comfort them, indicating their refusal to be pacified and to continue fighting against the status quo. The chorus is a bold assertion of independence, rejecting conformity and advocating for mutual support rather than blind obedience.
The bridge of the song reiterates the message of the chorus, with a strong emphasis on the rejection of fear. The singer is unafraid of confrontation, willing to take the fall if necessary to stand up for what they believe in. They won't let anyone make decisions for them or take away what is rightfully theirs, even if it means facing resistance.
