The group's earliest incarnation included German drummer En Esch and British vocalist Raymond Watts, the latter of whom left and rejoined the group several times over its history. The trio recorded the band's earliest albums in Germany before Konietzko and Esch moved to the United States, where they found much greater success with seminal industrial record label Wax Trax!. German guitarist Günter Schulz joined in 1990; both he and Esch continued with the band until KMFDM broke up in 1999. Konietzko resurrected KMFDM in 2002 (Esch and Schulz declined to rejoin) on Metropolis Records, and by 2005 he had assembled a consistent line-up that included American singer Lucia Cifarelli, British guitarists Jules Hodgson and Steve White, and British drummer Andy Selway. Konietzko and Cifarelli moved back to Germany in 2007, while the rest of band stayed in the U.S. In addition to these core members, dozens of other musicians have worked with the group across its nineteen studio albums and two dozen singles, with sales totaling in excess of two million records worldwide.
Critics consider KMFDM to be one of the first bands to bring industrial music to mainstream audiences, though Konietzko refers to the band's music as "The Ultra-Heavy Beat". The band incorporates heavy metal guitar riffs, electronic music, samples, and both male and female vocals in its music, which encompasses a variety of styles including industrial rock and electronic body music (EBM). The band is fiercely political, with many of its lyrics taking stands against violence, war, and oppression. KMFDM normally tours at least once after every major release, and band members are known for their accessibility to and interaction with fans, both online and at concerts. Members, singly or working together and with other musicians, have recorded under many other names, primarily Watts' PIG, Konietzko's Excessive Force, and Esch and Schulz's Slick Idiot.

Superhero
KMFDM Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Apple of everyone's eye
You're so clever
Multimillion-dollar smile
The world is your oyster and pearls are fun
Share them with everyone that you love
And you love everyone always all of the time
Missing link you eat your own dear
Bird of prey you can't control
In your world perception
Hazy
Connection precise
Cave in
Bow to the other side
You're a superhero
Demigod
No one anywhere anytime any which way but you
If the mirror speaks the truth we must aspire and work
Harder to be like you
'cause anything goes when you're a star
Regal elegant
You are bewitching and wild
Fifteen minutes a lifetime
They just don't apply
Shudder to think that if could ever be true
That anyone else is as lovely as you
You bear the name and the lineage that we desire
In the shutterbug-flash you look fabulous
With your made-to-order plastic-mask
You look so divine
The opening verses of KMFDM's song Superhero describe a character that is adored by everyone they encounter. They are clever, have a smile worth millions, and are perceived as a demigod for their elegance, regal bearing, and impeccable lineage. They hold themselves above others, believing they are the only ones truly worthy of admiration, and love everyone all the time. However, the next verse takes a turn, describing this person as an animalistic "missing link," a bird of prey that cannot control themselves. Their perception of the world is hazy, and while their connections may be precise, they ultimately cave in, bowing only to themselves. Despite this, they remain a superhero in their own eyes, believing they are above the rest of the world.
The song is a biting commentary on the cult of celebrity and the way it distorts both the celebrities themselves and the society that idolizes them. The lyrics paint a picture of a world in which being famous is the ultimate goal, regardless of the cost. The character at the center of the song is so wrapped up in their own mythos that they have lost touch with reality, seeing themselves as above everyone else. The final lines of the song suggest that this attitude has spread to the rest of society, with the idea that "anything goes" when you're a star. In some ways, it's a warning against unchecked narcissism, an ever-present danger in a world that increasingly values fame and attention over everything else.
