Cherry Blossom
Kacey Musgraves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Early April you walked up to me
Changing colors on city streets
Petals surrounding us in every shade of pink
We happened quickly as humans do
Summer was coming and change was too
Look at me now, I'm falling at your feet

I'm your cherry blossom, baby
Don't let me blow away
I hope you haven't forgotten
Tokyo wasn't built in a day
I'm your cherry blossom, baby
I don't wanna blow away

When we're on fire
It's something to see
No one can question the chemistry
Even in nature timing is everything

I'm your cherry blossom, baby
Don't let me blow away
I hope you haven't forgotten
Tokyo wasn't built in a day
Yeah, I'm your cherry blossom, baby
I don't wanna blow away
Away
Away

I'm your cherry blossom, baby
Don't let me blow away
I hope you haven't forgotten
Tokyo wasn't built in a day
I'm your cherry blossom, baby
Don't wanna blow away
Away
Away

Overall Meaning

In Kacey Musgraves's song "Cherry Blossom," the lyrics depict a blossoming relationship that is fragile and delicate like the cherry blossom itself. The opening lines, "Early April you walked up to me, Changing colors on city streets, Petals surrounding us in every shade of pink," set the scene of springtime when cherry blossoms typically bloom, symbolizing new beginnings and romance. The mention of the changing colors reflects the vibrant and evolving nature of their connection, while the petals surrounding them in pink represent the beauty and tenderness of their love.

The next lines, "We happened quickly as humans do, Summer was coming and change was too," suggest that their relationship escalated swiftly, as is often the case in passionate romances. The reference to summer and change approaching implies that the couple is aware of the transience of their love, knowing that seasons change and relationships can be fleeting. Despite this awareness, the singer finds themselves falling at the feet of their love interest, hoping for a lasting connection.

The chorus, "I'm your cherry blossom, baby, Don't let me blow away, I hope you haven't forgotten, Tokyo wasn't built in a day," emphasizes the vulnerability and fragility of their relationship. The comparison to the cherry blossom, which is easily blown away by the wind, highlights the fear of being forgotten or left behind. The reference to Tokyo not being built in a day serves as a reminder that relationships take time and effort to nurture and grow, urging the love interest to cherish and invest in their connection.

The lyrics "When we're on fire, It's something to see, No one can question the chemistry, Even in nature timing is everything," further emphasize the intensity and chemistry between the couple. Despite the potential fleeting nature of their relationship, the singer emphasizes the power and beauty of their connection when it's at its peak. The mention of timing in nature suggests that even in the natural world, perfect timing is essential for things to flourish, indicating the importance of staying present and seizing the moment in their love story.

Overall, "Cherry Blossom" is a poignant song that captures the emotions and uncertainties of a blossoming relationship. It conveys the fleeting nature of love, the desire for commitment, and the need to appreciate and nurture connections when they arise.

In Japan, cherry blossoms often symbolize things that are fleeting. (That's what I learned from my weeaboo phase, at any rate.) Even though the speaker and subject are together during this song, comparing herself to a cherry blossom holds that tension that they won't remain together--which you probably know already if you're listening to this album.

amazing and sad

In Japan, there are quite a lot of songs with the theme of farewell among the songs that use the word Sakura(cherry blossom).🌸

I feel so sad to think of Kacey while listening to this song 😢

I get what you are saying but don’t overthink it. She probably just met someone in Tokyo at that season. No wabi sabi required. ✨
