After releasing a demo in 1995, their first release was the self-titled EP Kampfar, by Season of Mist in 1996 followed by full length Mellom skogkledde aaser by Malicious Records in 1997. Being a studio band, without spending time on live shows or tours and with no intentions to slow down they released another EP Norse in 1998, and full length Fra underverdenen in 1999 both on Hammerheart Records. Then there were 7 years of studio silence although they began to play their first live shows in 2004.
Signing to Napalm records, they released three full length albums on that label: Kvass (2006), Heimgang (2008), & Mare (2011). All were well received by critics and listeners alike. Thus completed their contract with Napalm.
Their next releases were two singles leading up to their sixth full length album, 2014's Djevelmakt released by Indie Recordings.

Bukkeferd
Kampfar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ved himmelens ende
Dryg ble den hornfagre bukkeferd
Til nihundre hoders hall
Den isdryppende nattefrost seg paa
Før hoder trillet
Oksehorneñes høgreiste tun
Falt tungt I den kolsvarte skog
Bergtroll brølte, det braket I fjell
Eldgammel jord sank ned
Fra et skar mellom skogledde aaser
Ble all aasakraft samlet
For tiden var snau, før austfra de kom
Alle de trollende hoder
Mannheims berger ormens bane
Agnet kroken med oksehodet
Mot agnet gapte guders fiende
Bandet som ringer jorda
The lyrics of the song Bukkeferd by Kampfar are poetic and full of imagery. The song tells a story of a journey taken by a majestic horned creature, the Bukkefyrst, towards the hall of nine hundred heads. The setting is mystical, with a cold, frosty night and the mountains echoing with the roars of the mountain trolls. The Bukkefyrst's lure was a hook with an ox head attached to it, which was bait for the enemies of the gods. The lyrics describe the gathering of all the troll leaders to take the bait and the binding of the world with the magic of the Bukkefyrst. The imagery of the lyrics is dark and ominous and sets the tone for the song, which is full of black metal influences.
The lyrics of Bukkeferd draw from Norse mythology, and the Bukkefyrst is a creature from Scandinavian folklore. The Bukkeferd is a powerful image of a creature that is both regal and wild. The lyrics also reference the binding of the world in Norse mythology, which is an event that seals the fate of the gods and sets the stage for the end of the world. The themes of the song are dark and foreboding, and the lyrics do an excellent job of creating an atmosphere of mystery and fear.
