After releasing a demo in 1995, their first release was the self-titled EP Kampfar, by Season of Mist in 1996 followed by full length Mellom skogkledde aaser by Malicious Records in 1997. Being a studio band, without spending time on live shows or tours and with no intentions to slow down they released another EP Norse in 1998, and full length Fra underverdenen in 1999 both on Hammerheart Records. Then there were 7 years of studio silence although they began to play their first live shows in 2004.
Signing to Napalm records, they released three full length albums on that label: Kvass (2006), Heimgang (2008), & Mare (2011). All were well received by critics and listeners alike. Thus completed their contract with Napalm.
Their next releases were two singles leading up to their sixth full length album, 2014's Djevelmakt released by Indie Recordings.

over fjell og ned i daler
inn i skog
mørket faller over landet
ingen vet naar dagen gryr
solen synker
natten kommer
svart gift
livets fiende
jorden drikker blod
sorg
over fjell og ned i daler
onde krefter fram fra skogen
dødninger fra underverdenen
mørket faller over landet
ingen vet naar dagen gryr
solen synker
natten kommer
pesten dreper lystes barn
The lyrics of Kampfar's song "Mørk Pest" tell a story of sorrow and despair that has befallen the land, as a deadly plague spreads through the forest and the valleys, killing innocent children and poisoning the earth. The first stanza sets the stage for the darkness that is to come, as the sorrowful narrator observes the mountains and valleys, and then enters the forest, where the evil forces lurk.
The second stanza describes the plague as a "black poison" that is the enemy of life, and the earth itself is described as "drinking blood", as if it is a predatory entity that feeds on the suffering of the living. The third stanza reveals that the evil forces responsible for the plague are coming from the forest, and there are even undead beings rising from the underworld to spread their malevolent influence. The final stanza repeats the desolate scene of the first, as the darkness falls over the land, leaving the singer and the reader to wonder when or if the dawn will come.

Hmm, I'm a long time extreme metal fan (mostly black metal) and I can't believe I've never checked these guys out more! This is f'en brilliant! I know this isn't 'true black metal' but to me it is. They've caught the pure essence of what Norwegian black metal should be like!

"Whatever you think is 'true black metal' is true black metal. " Thats arguable, there are some BM fans who will tell you there is a standard for True Black Metal. I.E no keyboards no synths and no female vocals.
