School Skit Spirit 2
Kanye West Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You keep it going man, you keep those books rolling,
You pick up those books your going to read
And not remember and you roll man.
You get that associate degree, okay,
Then you get your bachelors, then you get your masters
Then you get your master's masters,
Then you get your doctron,
You go man, then when everybody says quit
You show them those degree man, when
Everybody says hey, your not working,
Your not making in money,
You say look at my degrees and you look at my life,
Yeah I'm 52, so what, hate all you want,
But I'm smart, I'm so smart, and I'm in school,
And these guys are out here making
Money all these ways, and I'm spended mine to be smart.
You know why?

Because when I die, buddy, you know
What going to keep me warm, that right, those degrees

Overall Meaning

In the lyrics of the song School Skit Spirit 2 by Kanye West, the singer seems to be addressing those people who question the value of education and criticize those who pursue academic degrees. The artist argues that education is an essential tool for personal and professional growth, and that those who invest their time and resources into acquiring degrees are smarter, wiser and more successful in life in general.

The singer starts by applauding those who keep reading and studying despite the challenges that come with it, saying that they will ultimately reap the benefits of their hard work. He goes on to outline the typical academic journey, from an associate degree to a bachelor's, a master's, and finally a doctorate. At each stage of the journey, he emphasizes the importance of staying committed, even when others around you are giving up.

Towards the end of the lyrics, the singer confronts those who belittle education by asserting that his degrees are something to be proud of. He highlights that he is investing his time and money into his education and that this will pay off for him in the long run. In sum, School Skit Spirit 2 is a rallying cry for the value of education and the pursuit of academic excellence.

MAN this skit is my life!!!! lol...I look back at all the years of schooling ive had, and realize that my life has completely past me by...and all I have to show for it is "that's right those degrees!"

I am not us

Kanye West is right. There are lot of people in my university being very cocky thinking they are so smart, and look down on ppl who went to easier universities. Only 19% of newly grads this year got a job with a bachelor's degree. Most of my friends went straight back home to their mama's house with their engineering or biology degree cuz they were only book smart and couldn't hussle in real world. My point is.. Kanye West is right! It's about how u hussle not all about being book smart.

He is not reffering to everyone who gets an education. He is talking about those people who go to school and get degrees and yet do not even put those degrees to use. He is also reffering to people who only study, and yet do not live life and enjoy the beauty of life in general. I know of 2 people (family members) who went to college back in the day (early 90s) and till this day have not put those degrees to use. One of them is now in their 50s and is depressed because she did not live her life.

I wish I would have listened to this guy... JK, I am a physician now, I love my job, I save lives, I make a ton of money, and I have a beautiful wife who is also a doctor. Education is the key to success in America and the gap between educated and uneducated quality of life is growing every day.
