She released her first, self-produced solo album, Kamien (Stone), in 1996. It was a great success, consisting of melancholy pop songs. In the same year, she was voted ‘Vocalist of the Year’ by the Polish music industry and received a Fryderyk in recognition of her achievements.
In 1997, she received another Fryderyk, this time for the album Zebra, in the category of ‘Composer of the Year’. With Zebra she changed her style, moving in the direction of American soul music.
In 1999, she recorded one of the most popular Polish albums ever, with the Balkan composer Goran Bregović, entitled Kayah & Bregović: it is a blend of old Slavic songs and modern rhythms. Most of the music was composed by Bregović for the band Bijelo Dugme (White Button), which he had been a part of and movie soundtracks that he had worked on. The lyrics are both translations of the original text and inspired. In the same year she was awarded a Wiktor and another Fryderyk, in the category ‘Vocalist of the Year’.
In 2000, she released the album Jaka Ja Kayah which featured pop, jazz, and techno-influenced songs. She also released the single "Aniol Wiedzial" ("The Angel Knew") from the album, duetted with Cesaria Evora in Portuguese, and recorded English-language versions of some of her songs.
She was twice cast in advertisements for Polish mobile phone's Web - Orange POP (formerly Idea POP).

W żłobie leży
Kayah Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Kolędować małemu
Jezusowi Chrystusowi
Dziś nam narodzonemu?
Pastuszkowie przybywajcie
Jemu wdzięcznie przygrywajcie
Jako Panu naszemu
Za wami pospieszymy
A tak Tego Maleńkiego
Niech wszyscy zobaczymy
Jak ubogo narodzony
Płacze w stajni położony
Więc go dziś ucieszymy
In Kayah's song W żłobie leży, the lyrics talk about the birth of Baby Jesus and invite people to come and sing carols to honor him. The song begins by asking who will run to sing carols to the little Jesus Christ, who has been born to us today. It then calls upon the shepherds to come and play music for him gratefully as our Lord. The song conveys the excitement and joy surrounding the birth of Jesus.
The next verse speaks about how the singers themselves will hurry after the shepherds with their songs. They express the desire to see this little baby being born in such a humble place, crying in a stable, and they wish to bring him joy on this day. The lyrics emphasize the simplicity and poverty of Jesus's birth, highlighting the significance of this event.
Overall, W żłobie leży is a traditional Polish Christmas carol that celebrates the birth of Jesus and encourages people to come together to honor and cherish him. The lyrics portray a sense of excitement, reverence, and joy surrounding this divine moment.

Beznadziejne wykonanie. Gwałt na klasycznym pięknie. Ale DIng dong jest super i Kayah ogólnie świetna wokalistka.
