Fowler put together a country band in 1998 and began playing Tuesday nights at Babe's on Sixth Street in Austin. Within two years, he'd begun recording albums and struck big with his self-released Beer, Bait and Ammo (2000). The album sold around 30,000 copies in the Texas area and garnered an impressive amount of airplay, particularly for the album's title track. The song became somewhat of a Texas anthem; Mark Chesnutt made the song part of his live show, and Sammy Kershaw recorded it. Fowler returned in 2002 with his third album, High on the Hog, and boasted some impressive guests, including Willie Nelson and David Lee Garza.
Do That With You Gone

I could do that by myself
If I wanted to waste a few years of my life
Girl, I wouldn't need your help
If I wanted to drink more than I should
Over how you done me wrong
Oh, baby, I could do that with you gone
And if I wanted to wonder who you're holding
Crying all night long
Watching you loving them in my mind
While I'm lying here alone
I could do that with you gone
If I wanted to hear one more lie
I could ask you when you're coming home
If I wanted to hurt more than I do
I could just keep hanging on
If I wanted to wake in the morning
With a stranger in my arms
Oh, baby, I could do that with you gone
And if I wanted to wonder who you're holding
Crying all night long
Watching you loving them in my mind
While I'm lying here alone
I could do that with you gone
And if I wanted to wonder who you're holding
Crying all night long
Watching you loving them in my mind
And if I wanted to wonder who you're holding
While I'm lying here alone
And if I wanted to know what hell feels like
Burning through my soul
Wanted to look like a fool for believing
That you ever loved me at all
I could do that with you gone
Kevin Fowler's "Do That With You Gone" is a powerful ballad about a man considering the aftermath of his partner's departure. The song begins with him thinking about how being lonely is something he could easily do by himself, without his partner's help. He then contemplates how he could easily waste years of his life on alcohol and thinking about his ex-partner. He reveals that he could manage to continue feeling hurt and broken-hearted, even if she were not around. The chorus highlights the realization that he can accept the fact that he is now alone and move on instead of being burdened with the weight of false hope and perpetual pain. The song's final verse sings of the ultimate pain of being fooled and deceived by someone he once loved.
The song has a bittersweet quality to its lyrics. On one hand, it emphasizes the hurt and pain of a broken relationship, but on the other hand, it hints at the possibility of moving forward with one's life. The lyrics reveal the singer's raw emotions, his confusion, and sadness. The song is a poignant reminder that sometimes walking away from someone who isn't good for us is the best choice.
