Fowler put together a country band in 1998 and began playing Tuesday nights at Babe's on Sixth Street in Austin. Within two years, he'd begun recording albums and struck big with his self-released Beer, Bait and Ammo (2000). The album sold around 30,000 copies in the Texas area and garnered an impressive amount of airplay, particularly for the album's title track. The song became somewhat of a Texas anthem; Mark Chesnutt made the song part of his live show, and Sammy Kershaw recorded it. Fowler returned in 2002 with his third album, High on the Hog, and boasted some impressive guests, including Willie Nelson and David Lee Garza.

The other night
I met this hot country momma
She was lookin' fine
I was thinkin' oooh yeah
I wanna
Take her home
Make her mine
Was woah hoss!!
Hit the break before
We go any further,
Let's get 1 thang straight
How country are ya?
Ya, she said I really need to know
Can you two steps?
Yep!
Good cuz I'd had to let you go
You love your momma?
Yep
Make lots of money?
You own a shutgun?
Yep, yep
I got 2 of those
With all these city slicker
Wanna-be's I had to be sure
How country are you? Yep!
Well she wore me out
With her long interrogations
I had my doubts and my own reservations
I had a list of little things
I wanted in a woman worth a wedding ring
So I sat her down
Said this won't take long
Yeah I've got a few questions of my own
How country are ya?
Yep, girl I really need to know
Do you shoot whiskey?
Yep! Good Cuz I had to let you go
Can you fry chicken?
Yep! Whoop up some gravy?
Oh, I think you'd just be my kinda baby
With all these city girls
Sniffin' around I had to be sure
How country are ya?
How country are ya?
Yep
We're like 2 peas in a pot
How country are ya?
Come on let's tie the knot
We go together like grits and gravy
Come on let's get to makin' us some babies
If we ever doubted it, now we both know
How country are ya? Yep!
How country are ya? Yep!
In Kevin Fowler's song "How Country Are Ya?", the lyrics depict the moment when the singer meets a "hot country momma" and tries to hit on her. However, she is not interested in just any man, she wants a real country boy. She asks him a series of questions to test his country credibility, such as if he can two-step (a popular country dance), if he loves his momma, if he makes lots of money, and if he owns a shotgun. The girl then turns the tables and asks her own set of questions to make sure he is truly country, such as if he shoots whiskey and can fry chicken.
In essence, the song is a lighthearted take on the concept of being "country." In today's world, "country" has become a fashionable concept that many people embrace, often without fully understanding its roots or traditions. The song is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on this phenomenon. The lyrics suggest that the girl is looking for someone who values their heritage, respects their family, and embodies the spirit of the countryside. This is why she places so much emphasis on determining how "country" the singer is before considering a relationship with him.
