Wells' success in the 1950s and 1960s was so enormous that she still ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of the Billboard country charts according to historian Joel Whitburn's book "The Top 40 Country Hits", behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. Wells was the third country music artist, behind Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 as well as being the seventh woman and first Caucasian woman to receive the honor. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
My Used To Be Darling
Kitty Wells Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That you are the one I once worshipped so
For they didn't know you as you were then
My used-to-be darling, I can't trust you again
(Chorus:)
My used-to-be darling, once loving and sweet
Today you're no more than a stranger to me
My used-to-be darling, just look what you've done
As I see you tonight in the dim lights of shame
I remember how proudly I once spoke your name
As you touch your lips to that bottle of wine
I remember the thrill when they used to touch mine
(Repeat chorus)
The lyrics of Kitty Wells's song, My Used To Be Darling, convey the pain and remorseful feelings of a woman towards her former lover. The first verse suggests that the woman is hesitant to reveal to others that her ex-partner was once her beloved, implying that he has changed considerably from the person he used to be. The chorus further emphasizes this point, highlighting the distance that has grown between them. The woman looks at her partner with shame and disgust, as he has become someone completely different - someone she cannot trust again.
The second verse is particularly poignant, as it expresses the woman's dismay at the consequences of her partner's wild behavior. She cites his excessive drinking and reckless actions as the reasons for their separation. She observes his behavior with a sense of sadness, recalling the time when she too enjoyed the excitement of their youth. The lyrics are filled with nostalgia, pain, and a longing for what once was but can never be again.
Overall, the lyrics of My Used To Be Darling are a testament to the power of love and its eventual decline. They depict the unfortunate end of a relationship that once held promise and happiness. The song is a reminder that people change and that love often fades away, leaving behind only the memories of what once was.

My used-to-be darling, just look what you've done
You must realize what you have done, my former beloved
As I see you tonight in the dim lights of shame
Watching you like this, tonight, with shame all around
I remember how proudly I once spoke your name
I recollect how confidently I used to introduce you to others
As you touch your lips to that bottle of wine

I remember the thrill when they used to touch mine
