Wells' success in the 1950s and 1960s was so enormous that she still ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of the Billboard country charts according to historian Joel Whitburn's book "The Top 40 Country Hits", behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. Wells was the third country music artist, behind Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 as well as being the seventh woman and first Caucasian woman to receive the honor. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

I realize the way your eyes deceived me With tender looks that I mistook for love So take away the flowers that you gave me And send the kind that you remind me of Paper roses paper roses Oh how real those roses seem to be But they're only imitation Like your imitation love for me I thought that you would be a perfect lover You seemed so full of sweetness at the start But like a big red rose that's made of paper There isn't any sweetness in your heart Paper roses paper roses Oh how real those roses seem to be But they're only imitation Like your imitation love for me Like your imitation love for me
The song “Paper Roses” by Kitty Wells talks about love and how it can sometimes deceive people. The opening line states, “I realize the way your eyes deceived me, with tender looks that I mistook for love.” These lyrics convey how someone can mistake kind gestures or physical attraction as love, and it can lead to heartbreak. The lyrics also mention the paper roses that were given by the person, which appear to be realistic but are just a copy of the real thing, much like the love they had for the singer.
The song also highlights how the person who the singer thought would be a “perfect lover” was not the person they had anticipated. They seemed charming and sweet at the beginning, but their true character became apparent afterward, revealing their lack of sweetness in their heart. The chorus repeats the metaphor of paper roses to represent the lack of genuineness in the person's expressions of love.
Overall, the song “Paper Roses” by Kitty Wells is a poignant representation of how words and gestures do not always convey actual love. The paper roses and the imitation love in the song symbolize how appearances can often deceive, and it is essential to look beyond them to see the truth.
